Broken my 1Ds Mark II

Whilst out on a shoot yesterday, the wind managed to blow over my 500 f/4 and 1Ds MkII, presumably with the wind catching the lens hood and filling it with air as it blew over backwards with the body hitting flat on the ground.

Now, it was totally my fault as the tripod had been used on uneven ground and so the legs were adjusted for that. I'd then moved location and just put the tripod down for a moment, but obviously at a bit of an angle which made it easier to blow over - and it was a very gusty day where we were.

Now, first the good news. It appears that my 500 f/4 is fine. I kept using it and the images still look sharp and properly exposed and the IS seems to still work so that is good.

The less good news is that the 1Ds MkII hit the ground flat with 4kg of lens attached from a height of almost 6ft. This has cracked the smaller of the LCD screens as shown below.

My question is whether anyone has had a similar problem and knows how much it may cost to repair. I am insured but probably don't want to risk bumping up my insurance if it isn't too expensive. Likewise, I don't really need to fix it I don't think as the only useful information on that screen is how many shots I have left.

Thanks

Paul

I know WeddingHack cracked his 5D last week and it appears that you can get replacement screens for them. Might not be as bad news as you thought. :)

At least I hope not. :)

OUCH!!

I would cry like a girl!:D

But as for the insurance and related factors I can't help much...

Thanks for the link Alison but it is actually the display screen below that is also broken. I'll be on the phone to Fixation tomorrow I think.

Anton - I was not a happy bunny! But, these things happen...

That's for the replacement of the whole screen, it covers both the picture viewing bit and the white balance and pic quality bit. So it should cover the bit you broke?

Ali B, Paul has broken the actual bottom LCD display, not the covering screen.

Thats just bad luck Paul.

oops, really sorry mate, hope you can get it fixed pronto.

Paul

Had a look through my parts manuals but dont have the 1dsmk2, but i have the 1ds which is probably the same design for parts like that, Dont use the part numbers as they are for 1Ds NOT 1Dsmk2, its just to give an idea of how it fits together.

Colchester camera repairs did my top plate lcd for £70, cant imagine it will be much different.
Dean:)

Thanks for your sympathy all.

Mark, at least that diagram confirms the two screens are separate units. I'll get on the phone to Fixation and Colchester tomorrow.

fastworld - I agree it has held up superbly well. It was about 6kg dropping from 6 feet so could have been much worse. I knew these 1-series cameras were tough...

I cannot help with how you fix it mate  But I would be interested in how much you get it fixed for if you dont mind . Just incase. Mind these bodies do take some beating ..

 more so happy the 500 was ok mate;)

I had to send my 1Ds MKII in a couple of years ago, the top wheel (the one that changes aperture) was only working intermittantly, (over use probably), Canon repaired/serviced /cleaned the camera for around £150, which when talking to the technician was a set fee for any minor works?

Yes very good, someone I know had a 'proper' video camera get knocked off its tripod by someone when filming (they ran a trolley into it) it basically shunted everything inside of the body, so probably lucky it didnt fall lens first.

I'd suggest Elstree for a quote, at least you'd know it would be done properly with a Canon warranty.
