Broken red ring on 24-105mm L lens. Anybody else had this happen?

Yes
Picked up my lens to put it on the camera and the red ring snapped away in three pieces. Yes I know that obviously it will not have any effect on the lens working etc..but still not pleased. Has this happened to anybody else and does anybody have any idea how I go about getting it repaired? I am in Coventry so not too sure where I send it to. Any help appreciated.

Wrap one of your postie's discarded rubber bands round the slot - it'll work just as well as the plastic ring and is easily replaced when the rubber denatures in sunlight. Less brittle than the plastic too.

It is nice when you get your first L....but I find it annoyingly conspicuous when I'm out, going to put some black tape over it.

What's wrong with being conspicuous? And it surely isn't much more conspicuous than Sigma's 'EX' gold ring or the Canon Ultrasonic gold ring... or how about Canon's teles which are almost all white????

In certain places i rather not show the red rings, i have even changed the straps on the camera so they are not identifiable. However my line of thought is, it will take one to know there cameras to know what the red ring means, also jsut the shape of the lens will denote its a high apeture lens and not a f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

When I'm out and about on the streets, wandering down back streets in London.....you don't really want to be advertising the fact you've got a few grand's worth of camera round your neck. Plain strap and cover up the red ring and you don't stand out as much.

I doubt that the kind of person who was going to do your head in would know that a red ring made a lens more valuable than a gold ring or even a kit lens. They just see the camera with a lens protruding - even if it was a bridge camera I am sure - and think 'expensive camera = fodder'

It's the same as people that take the labels off photo backpacks and bags. Pointless really. There's only one reason that a guy carries a backpack around town - it's because he has something expensive to carry.

What does expense have to do with needing to carry something? :cuckoo:

I'm not particularly paranoid and a fairly big bloke so I'm not too bothered....but just changing the strap and covering conspicuous markings means someone can't clock the fact you've got something worth nicking a hundred yards away, it's worth the tiny bit of effort imo.

Hiding the red ring is pointless. I'd guess most thieves think a red ring is something you get after a curry. They just see a camera as worth nicking - red ring or not.

Missing the point. A common mugger won't be looking at labels, he'll be looking at shapes.

You know a sports car is a sports car because of the shape of the vehicle in comparison to, say, a Fiat ciquecento, and you associate the shape of the vehicle with expense, irrelevant of badge.

It's the same with cameras. Cover the badge, and only a camera enthusiast will know the difference between a Nikon D3x and a Canon 1D3.
To a mugger, it's a big camera, and through their basic understanding of the laws of technology, size is usually of a positive correlation to cost.
They will know that Canon Ixus<Canon 450d<Canon 1D3, just by associating size with cost. Take away the badge, and they'll still know.

Small digital camera<Big, pokey lens camera<even bigger pokey lens camera

I'm not talking about the labels either....just the general appearance of whatever you're carrying. Big camera more obvious target than small camera. Camera with bright red strap and red bits on it more obvious than plain black camera on plain black strap.

Certainly carrying something plain black over your shoulder is less conspicuous at a hundred yards or so than a having a big Canon advert round your neck....that's why I cover them up a bit.....if you're wandering around London the most likely place you're going to lose your kit is a short distance from the main tourist spots like Leicester Sq.

I see your point and it's duly noted :)

Talk about off-track, Deano wanted to know about geting it repaired not about how conspicious the red ring is.

Deano, Canon have a list of sevice centers you can take the lens to be repaired at. No idea on costs for that but I hear that Canon have a minimum service charge that's quite steep. Here's the link for you http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/services_locator/index.aspx

Thanks for that....Yeah I was about to start hanging myself...it was going off track big time. Thanks for the link. Will call one of the Canon centres now and let you know how I get on

Not a problem mate ;)

You can't be serious - you mean it's taken you this entire thread and several hours to think 'Oh I'll call Canon'

Sorry to be a complete arse but where is people's common sense these days?!

I posted the thread late last night so only just had chance after getting in to reply to posts. What I was after was maybe somebody who knew an alternative way / cheaper way of getting it sorted or a quick fix etc..

Yeah calling Canon would be a last resort..but looks like thats what I will have to do.

I have plenty of common sense thanks.... Complete arse....

yup, exactly the same thing happened to me with the same lens.

just - thought i'd answer the question

now please refrain from throwing insults at each other.. managing to fight over a piece of plastic is particularly impressive

does anybody know where i can get some red elastic bands at a good price
i want to put them on my lenses so it looks like i have "L" lenses

Do you think some red nail varnish aroung my canon 28-135 might draw some attention :D

You can pick plenty up off almost any UK pavement wheth the Post Litterers throw them after use.

If you have to start a sentence with "Sorry to be a complete arse" then perhaps it's not worth saying it all.

If you want a cheap quick fix then the answer is to do a quick fix yourself. Put the broken pieces together in the correct order. Get some clear silicone sealant and run it around the empty groove. Wipe off all the surplus, and some of what is in the groove, so not too much is squeezed out when you refit the band. Put your red band in. Wipe off all the silicone which may have been pushed out. Make sure the red band joins together nicely. Leave to set.

Thanks I was going to try a drop of superglue but the sealant might be better. Will give it a go.
