Broken Redsnapper Tripod Head

Hi All, as per the attached pictures a section of my redsnapper tripod head has sheared away from the other section. The tripod was stored in my car and as far as I am aware it has not been subject to any accidental damage.

I was just wondering if this is a known fault or what might of caused it? Or am I just unlucky.

Have a word with the guys at Redsnapper Ian. One of the legs (the detachable one that turns into a monopod) threaded on mine and I couldn't reattach it. I sent them a pic and they replaced it at no cost and I'd had it a good few months.

I think the owner is actually a forum member. Sure someone will know his name.

I have owned this now for quite a few years to be fair, but will message him and see what he says.
 
Had my RSH 24 head break earlier in the year. Was 4 years old and either kept in car or home. Not subjected to knocks etc but opened case for use and found handle broken. Could only assume some kind of metal fatigue. Spoke to Joe who said he may be able to replace part if there were any spares around. Unfortunately could not come up with anything so cost a new head. Sent Joe pictures but unable to locate at the mo.

The specs say that that head will fit any tripod with a 3/8 thread so I think It would fit yours.
Most tripods/heads are interchangeable.

Hi, it does say though that it's a female thread and the thread on my tripod is female? See attached pic
 
i had exact same thign happen with my redsnapper. while taking pics on brighton beach literally about the 3rd time using it the bolt between head and tripod sheered clean off and only by pure luck that i had camera strap around my wrist did i mange to save my camera and lens crashing on the the pebbles.
folling from that i then had a leg that had broken parts inside the tightener and the leg wouldnt tighten up. suiffice to say wasnt impressed. though the head got fixed with a new larger bolt it has never sat perfectly horzontal and always had some play in it rendering it pretty useless as a tripod and as such has been sat gathering dust as i wont trust my kit on any.
i know people say they are good quality and great price but for me its basically been £70 down the drain for what turned out to be a duffer.
 
Never had any problem with mine. That looks like quite a bit of force would have to have been applied.

That is odd. On Red Snapper's website every tripod has a male bolt on top of the tripod for mounting a head. Are you sure this bolt hasn't screwed out when removing your head? Is it still attached to the bottom of your head and will it come out?

Going by the pic of your head, the top plate of the tripod is attached to the head, unscrew and put back on tripod and the head you linked will fit :)

I have just taken another picture, see attachment. It appears the base of the head is fixed and it won't detach. Maybe this an older model?
 
I've just had a look at mine and the knurled bit should twist off of the head . it maybe tight as mine was but it should come off . You could try screwing it back on the the tripod . Hold the knurled part tight and twist the head off . You'll be them left with the head screw in place .

Yea, this. Looks like part of your tripod is still attached to the head. Give it a good twist off.

The knurled part just spins along with the head when I do that. Might try and put it back on the tripod like you say
 
It should come off as the screw is reversible , that's why its thinner at the bottom . Worse case applying some heat to the screw may help . Just be careful not to burn yourself. Another way maybe to try and remove the screw still attached to the head .

I put it on the tripod but it still just spins, I think I have an old design. On the attached picture, the bubble level together with the 6 quadrants it's attached to, just spins.:mad:

Hhmm very strange . If your lucky you maybe able to get the pieces that you need ie the head mount screw and the " cap " not sure what else to call it to make it a fuctionable tripod again. I still believe that it should come off though as the tripods should be universal with the option to change the heads . That head is dead I'd say and you need a new one .

Just a thought have you tightened the pan screw on the head and then tried to remove it ?
 
you might need to put the head back on, lock the rotation if you can, and then undo it
the male screw thread and the bit with the rounded knurls on isnt part of the head.

i think ball heads are more robust, the expensive redsnapper one certainly is :)

Yep tried that, the knurled bit, bolt, and bubble are all part of the same piece so they all just spin through the head piece.

I think its just jammed on tight and needs some force behind it .
 
I've also just noticed three small grub screws under the knurled part . These may need loosening with an Allan key ?

Just completely removed them but they haven't had any affect on it. I think the bolt is stuck inside the head and it's not coming out unless I take an angle grinder to it. Thanks for your help though.
 
No worries it maybe easier to try redsnapper for some replacement parts . I can't see it costing too much and a least you can get another head and rescue the tripod .

I've sent Joe a message so hopefully he responds. It would be a shame to waste the tripod as there's nothing wrong with it.
 
Good squirt with Plusgas where they meet should do the trick, WD40 might also work, clamp the knurled part in a vice then undo the broken head, grips might help too.

Freed up lots of seized bike parts including seatposts with penetrating spray and this shouldn't be anywhere near as difficult
 
I'll have a look if it's the same one as mine i have one left about somewhere, It's leg just give way and wouldn't fasten it just continued constantly slipping and i never had forced it tight to cause it, barely even used it at the time !
I did contact joe who replied initially and then nothing so i gave up and replaced it with a Manfrotto tripod.

If it's the same as mine you can have it for postage costs as i only planned on binning it years ago.

Mine looks a bit different to your head not sure if it will still be any use if needed.. Excuse the quick rubbish quality phone photos

Is there any chance of salt water corrosion? It only takes a little bit. Manfrotto is also very unreliable in wild outdoors conditions. My old 190 broke in a very spectacular way in half! POS.

Yeah the head looks different but the knurled base looks the same, got to be worth a shot.

No i hadn't even took it outdoors id barely used it if look at photo here you can see even the raised edge where rubber foot has been made, after some use that would have worn away anyway its old news now :)

Hi Ian just checking these are the parts your actually after items in IMG_0079 before i find a box and weigh them :)
 
I might be interested in the remains of the broken tripod, #throttle :-O

ianc could you keep your broken bit? I'm tempted to try n make 1 good pod out of two broke ones :-O :-)
 
Hi Paul,

I use the bag with the replacement tripod, So assuming Ian doesn't need the piece that the legs and head attach to ive basically might have that piece and 3 legs with feet ( one section on a leg is faulty )

Ian assuming the items i photo'd before are correct bits i weighed them along with box and bubble wrap and its weight is just around 650 so prices are as follows from Royal mail so take your pick :D
