Broken SB-900 - Thumbs up to Nikon

Hi all,

I dropped my SB-900 at a wedding a few weeks ago and the only damage was the pull-out clear plastic wide angle thing snapped and fell out. This has had the effect of telling the flash to constantly set itself to cover 14mm.

I never use this pull-out thing but I can't seem to override the zoom setting of 14mm. So I guess I need to get it fixed. Anyone know a good repairer and how much it will cost? I'll call Nikon on Monday but just wondered if anyone had any alternative ideas? :)

Yeah, you can't override the zoom setting when the wide angle adapter is pulled out (which it thinks it is, because it's not there).

About the only thing you can do, other than having it repaired, is to maybe shove some cardboard in there to make it think the WA adapter is still in there. You'll then be able to manually set your zoom, and if you still want to go wide, you can always throw the dome diffuser on there (which will force it back out as wide as it'll go again).

Thanks to John for replying. To anyone else in the slightest bit interested I thought I'd update the OP.

I sent the SB-900 to Nikon on Friday last week. They called me today to take payment and said I'd have it back (repaired) tomorrow (Thursday). It's cost £45 but that's seems ok to me.

Nice one Nikon

Result :)

I know on the older SBs, Nikon built in a button combo that you pressed just in case that happened - good on Nikon for doing a repair for that price though :)

I don't think there was ever a button combo to repair things that snapped off. ;)
