I bought a set of two Yongnuo 622C flash triggers off ebay from a Chinese importer. One of the units works and one is broken. The seller has good feedback and has been helpful so far. He said I could try repairing it myself which I did to no avail. He then said I could return the item for a replacement but said I had to pay the postage costs. It does say this on the ebay listing but I have been reading up on ebays T&Cs and it sounds like costs of postage for broken items is a bit of a grey area.

Does anyone know if I have to pay or the seller? I has to go back to Shanghai and the quotes I have got so far are £30+ unless you want it to go surface mail which takes 60+ days!
 
My understanding is that even for 'items significantly not as described' , the buyer ends up responsible for return postage.

Bit pants really!
 
You've agreed to his terms by purchasing it. It won't cost you anywhere near £30 to return it.

Yeah that's the price I got but if he wants me to send both the broken and working units back it's probably going to be around 1kg. They came as a set in the same box so I have emailed to see what he says.

If it is only £13 it's not worth opening an ebay dispute even if I could get the postage back. I want to sort it sooner rather than later.
 
Hi Andy Ebay can be a pain specially when buying from overseas, if you send it back they could quite easily say you've tampered with it so you could loose out anyway. Saying it hasnt arrived (not that you would) is a nono because you've already entered in to the discussion with the seller about it been broken.
My advice would be buy a new one and keep the broken one for spare parts because Ebay can be a law unto themselves

I asked the seller if I could open it and attempt a repair which he happily agreed to. The unit has suffered some scratches and dents inside and outside because they are a b****r to open. I have asked him to confirm again that he is still ok with this before I send them back.

Single units seem to be around £30 so if I can't get it sorted I will do as you suggested and just buy a single replacement.
 
I've had a duff off camera cable before (had lots of good stuff from the same seller though) in the end the cost of sending it back for a replacement was more than buying a second one.

Second cable from the same seller was fine, got the old one sitting on my desk waiting to be hacked into whenever I feel curious
 
Report the item as "not as described" with "item faulty" as reason and state that it is not worth paying the return postage in order to send it back as the cost is so high. Seller will invariably refund or resend the item. I buy small items from china (components etc) all the time and this is what happens. If seller doesn't do this then leave negative feedback because item was faulty and seller will refund or resend in order to get you to remove the feedback. Nothing underhand or illegal then as you are being above board all along.
