Budget 90/100-300 zoom

i am looking for a budget 300 zoom for long end wildlife shots, there is 3 options i feel are in my current price range.
circa 1987 100-300 dealer
later 100-300 USM on another forum
New 100-300 USM on ebay for under £100

I am sure i have read the earlier 100-300 are the better option, advise please.

If you go with the dealer, check to see if lens works on your body. Of the older lenses only canon EOS lenses work on the current digital backs.

Personally, you ain't going to get much of anything for £100, especially a zoom, but I accept budget contraints are big factors.

A 100-300mm lens is just about usable for wildlife (again depends what you want to take), 300mm is usually the minimum focal length, 400mm and more is usually required.

The best budget zoom out there at the moment on a budget is the canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM (£400-500 uk prices), don't get confused with similar named canon lenses, it's the IS version that tops the group, but that would mean saving some more coppers.

The dealer option is a ef 100-300 for EOS but not USM version, i appreciate i am not going to get the best for around the £100 mark.
I suspect it will not see a lot of use or give startling results but i would like to try a few shots and if it works out i will empty the bank for better glass.

how about an old 70-210mm F4, usually had for about £60, push-pull zoom and constant F4.

hmm there's not that massive difference between 210 and 300 (1.4x), try before you buy I'd say!
