Hello

I shoot live music and will be covering a festival or two over the summer, but I will be in need of a much longer zoom lens then what I use already. I just wanted opinions on what lens would be good to buy on a budget. I buy all my equipment second hand and have been very lucky with prices on almost brand new stuff from sellers on Gumtree.

Another option instead of buying is also renting, and I've been told about Calumet and recently got their student discount card but has anyone on here rented from them at all?

Thanks

What camera do you have as it would help to suggest which lens?

Also what is you budget, a tight budget to some maybe pocket change to others :D

Try www.lensesforhire.co.uk

For a very cheap zoom with reasonable IQ, try the old Canon 70-210mm F4 - come up used from time to time for about £60! Avoid the 75-300mm and 90-300mm lenses if you can.

I use the Canon 30D, and my budget is like a couple of hundred (so yeah probably pocket money to others lol) only a poor student though.

The tamron 55-200 is a great budget zoom. I'm not a Canon user, but I often hear the Canon 55-250 recommended as well, and it fits your budget.

many thanks as I am looking for a similar combo

For the money, the 55-250 is an excellent lens, mine gets lots of use. The AF could be faster and may struggle with the lighting at gigs though. The IS is superb allowing hand holding 1/30s at 250mm (with a bit of care), not that that sort of shutter speed is likely to be of use at a gig of course ;)

The 55-250 is great for the money, I had one with my 30D.

I don't like risking my DSLR at festivals so usually load up my old 80's Nikon EM with film and a 50 f1.8 :)

 A big thumbs up from me for the Tamron 55-200 an absolute belter of a lens for about 65 pounds...You can't go wrong:)

The Canon 55-250 IS is the current budget telephoto of choice for the canon user replacing the Sigma 70-300 APO. If you want cheaper the aformentioned 70-210F4 is a pretty decent bit of glass if you can put up with the push/pull zoom and the scaletrix focussing motor.

Three current Canon lenses on the market that offer a budget price but surprisingly good quality are the 18-55 IS, 55-250 IS, 50mm f/1.8.

Between the three you get a moderate wide to normal zoom, a telezoom good for portraits and other stuff that you need to 'zoom' for, and a very good low light lens.

You could pick up a 50mm f/1.8 for around 50-70 quid, an 18-55 IS for around the same, and a 55-250 for less than £200. Jobs a good 'un.

Sigma 18-200mm is pretty good. You might want to check one out first though because I bought one and it was the second Sigma I had to send in for calibration for being out of focus in the corners. Although I am suggesting it, I am not selling it very well

The Tamron really is a great lens for the money. I used one for a good while and took some great shots with it.
