I'm after a macro on a tight budget (ain't we all) only about £150.00 second hand.
Has anybody tried the sigma 70-300 with a raynox-dcr 259 fitted? Any good results?
 
You can use the lenses you already have with either a reverse mounting macro adapter or extension tubes and that will cost you less than £10.
 
While I've only got the 17-55 kit lens it will but the raynox works best at 200mm onwards I believe?
So I thought not the best lens in the world I not just have a macro lens..
 
Buy a 50mm f1.8 and a set of Auto extension tubes, will give you more than 1:1 and as there's no glass in the tubes you wont lose any IQ - you could do with a cheap manual flash to add some light.

As above i'm going to go for the Tamron 90mm once i get to grips with D80, seen some really good results with it.
 
Well I managed a bargain or two got a Jessop 360AFD flash gun as new boxed £20.00, Nikon 50mm 1.8 boxed as new £30.00 and the sigma 70-300 for £60.00 so I just need a tripod and some extensions...

Or...

Use the extension tubes with your 18-55 and then will get closer than 1:1 as the 18-55 already focuses to 1:3 where the 50mm is 1:5

With the kit lens you will be about 4cm await from your subject at full magnification.

Some use tripods some don't. I find them too finiky at such large magnifications unless the subject is completely still for a while.
 
I tried a 18-55 IS II kit lens with a macro dioptre set to start with and while the quality wasn't great it definitely got me hooked on macro. In the end I ended up splurging on a Canon 100 f2.8 L macro lens when I had the cash and haven't looked back. I'd definitely recommend a dedicated macro lens though as the IQ will undoubtedly be better.

I wanted to try the cheaper option first but as always you end up buying the better option in the end :lol:
