Hi guys,

Just need some ideas for a cheap tripod, up until this point I've never needed a tripod however I'm off to Amsterdam soon and wanted to try a few night shots so no point spending a lot.

Here is some options that I've come up with:

  • Manfrotto Compact - £39 (don't really want to spend this much, but I'm considering it)
  • Joby GorillaPod Original - £14
  • Ultrapod 1 - £18.00 (not sure about this one as its so low)
It only needs to hold an X100s, if it can hold a D7000 with a 50mm thats a bonus but not essential and it needs to be portable.

Does anyone else have any recommendations?

Ultrapod II rather than Ultrapod I. Trust me on this - I've had both for over ten years.
But it really depends whether you want a trpod that will work on the pavement, in which case the Manfrotto Compact is the best choice of those listed although it's still fairly short, or one that has to be on a wall or table. Personally, I'd spend more and look for something like a used Manfrotto BeFree or similar.

It's probably worth putting a request in the Wanted section of the Members' Market to see what you get offered.
 
Manfrotto compact is a great in between tripod. I am quite happy using it with Canon 650d and 55-250 and equally as happy with Canon G9.. It never feels too much or too little. Picked mine up in the classifieds for 20 quid but would happily pay 39 if I needed to replace.
 
I have got a Hama traveller tripod, not the mini one though. I have changed the head for a manfrotto copy so that I can use it with my manfrotto release plate. Very good sturdy but light tripod
