I notice that the Canon 5D Mk1 and 1DS Mk 1 are cameras going second hand for between £600 & £700 and whilst not exactly peanuts certainly put them within range of many of us possibly resigned to sticking with crop frame.
Anybody got experience of these cameras and what the pluses and minuses might be of older Full Frame cameras
 
Neither are very user friendly camera's so would have a severe learning curve. If you have primarily EF mounting lenses, the 5D mk 1 is a nice piece of kit to use as you don't really lose out anything over what you currently have, only gain better image quality and ISO performance.

I've never used or read reviews of a 1DS mk i so can't comment on that, but the 5D mk i can now be picked up for £500 if you shop around (good condition also) due to the 5D mk ii dropping to around £1100 (ish) second hand also.

If you do go full frame, you must be aware that the price of the body is irrelevant as its the lenses that will cost you in the long run anyway. You really do need good quality glass to get the most out of a FF sensor.
 
go for the 5d, you will still be able to blow the photographs up to the size of a house, the photos will be sharp if you have good glass

it may not have the fastest processor in it, but it can still go work faster than you lol
just cause it old doesn't mean it no good
 
Just be careful, I tried a 5d and loved it....
Then I tried a 1d mkiin and loved it.....

I ended up with the 1ds mkii

The only thing I can see myself upgrading to is a mkiii!!

IMHO you should go for the 5D, you'll never look back from FF
As said you should get one for about £500, make sure it's not a 1xxxxxxxx serial or if it is then check the mirror fix.

If you can stretch to around £850 then the 1ds mkii is just awesome!
 
Although not L glass I have some good Canon lenses and the Tamron 70-200 f2.8,and Adam in 2 years time I get a pension lump sum which is when I have the 5D3,1DS3,L glass conversation with the wife

Compared to what? - there's very little difference to the ##D range

You can get 24mp FF sony a850 900's for £700 if you look hard enough.
 
I have a 5D.

I find the image quality to be good, all ISO's being useable up to and including 3200. I only use the centre focus point and one shot and I find the focus performance to be perfectly fine. I never shoot mare than one shot at a time so the frame rate doesn't matter to me. The rear screen is much bigger than that of my 20D but I only use it for a quick composition and DR check so even the 20D's was fine for me.

Negatives are...

There's some vignetting but these days processing software can usually sort such things out.

Dust bunnies... The 5D doesn't have any built in sensor cleaning and seems far more prone to dust bunnies than any of my prevous DSLR's.

I suppose another negative could be that with FF you may possibly be using longer lenses to get the framing you want and possibly smaller apertures and lower shutter speed and/or higher ISO's to get deeper DoF. For decades I used film cameras but I soon got into the swing of an APS-C DSLR and when returning to FF with the 5D the change in focal length, aperture and shutter speed did surprise me a bit.

I think going FF is probably worthwhile, but don't expect a night and day difference.

That really depends on the person using it. If the person is technically minded and is an experienced DSLR user then learning any differences between cameras take little to no time.

If they need all the help they can get and struggle with all things technical then you have a point, although calling it a severe learning curve is a bit dramatic :)

Your right thought they are really starting to get affordable and the 5d id a great camera. Even the mk2's and d700's new price of £1300-£1400 is not bad at all, being about half the price they where. There are also rumours that canikon are both going to release a budget FF for around £1500. I'm considering making the move myself and selling all my crop lenses while they are still fetching a good price.
