Bulk Loader question...

A quick question about bulk loaders...

I expect I must be getting close to the end of the bulk roll of Fomapan 400 I have in my loader and, this being the first bulk roll I've used, am curious to what happens when it runs out.

How do you know when the bulk roll has come to an end? Is it affixed to the centre spindle so you feel resistance, or is it loose so you could potentially spool it completely into the cassette?

The rolls I have used are not fixed to anything, the end just comes out without resistance.
On my loaders, each frame wound out is accompanied by a click and an incrementing counter, although I don't use the counter, just count the clicks.
When the clicks stop the film has finished.

I don't know if I am trying to tell you how to suck eggs,

if it does go inside the 10 quid film retrieval tool will get it out easy enough. Also handy to get the leader out of exposed cartridges when you want to save them for reloading.

Yeah, I've got a film retriever (my F80 takes the film completely into the cassette when it rewinds, so I need one for that) but, to be honest, I suppose it's probably better that I do wind it completely into the cassette rather than risking an 8 inch leader that gets exposed to light and loses some frames.

Thanks Dave. I expect I will be reaching that stage soon. I use the clicks too - around 41 to 42 clicks usually guarantees a 36-exposure roll (with maybe a frame or two extra if I'm careful).

My particular party trick was to wind on more than one cassette with the gate closed, wondering why it is more resistant than normal. I have lots of film rolls for testing cameras.
Haven't done that for a while.....maybe I'm cured!

Yep, done that too!

Et Voila! One roll of film with scratches on most of the frames...

Still, I did buy a cheap roll of Fomapan because I knew I would mess things up. Hopefully I'll now be more adept if I put a roll of something more expensive in it.

I read about that method but was afraid of knackering up the negative with a pool of water.
