Is it worth taking an interest in? I mean Iv heard it blocks out the rays of light so it dont screw your pic up as much, but im looking to buy one so, What I wanna know, Can i attach it to my 18-55mm VR lens, I mean does it just clip on etc?

Sorry im so new :lol:

They clip on the end. You need one designed to suit the 18-55 lens otherwise you may get vignetting (darkening of the edges). Wider angle zooms have a petal lens hood, whereas telephotos use a normal shaped one.

Do you know any that you could recommend :)

Do you mean a TULIP hood like THIS? If so then it will deffinately give you vignetting on your kit lens at the widest end!

I'm interested too, after one for my 18-55mm lens for my D60, so would be interested to Know..

:thumbs: OP, good question

As above, you may want a Tulip one, or perhaps the one designed for the lens; HB-45

1 -> HB-45, £3.99 from HK http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HB-45-Lens-Ho...ns_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET?hash=item3ef7e98df2

2 -> Tulip, £2.99 from China http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Petal-52-mm-L...ns_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET?hash=item2c534c7521

3 -> rubber thing, £3.49 from China http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/52mm-Rubber-L...ns_caps_hoods_adaptors_ET?hash=item563a294cf2

IMHO, I'd go for the HB-45 as it's got the bayonet fitment like the OEM ones do. The Tulip one screws into the front like a filter does (and that's a nause, imo). God knows how the rubber thing fits on???

HTH :)

I got a lens hood for my Nikon 16-85mm after I damaged the original. The Nikon replacement was about £30. :eek: The copy which I got from Ebay cost £6 delivered from Hong Kong. I assume it fits OK as at the moment I don't have a camera to try it on. :lol:

If you must have one, have a look at amazon HERE

Do you think im best going into jessops just so i can get a professional opinion on it?

In my non-professional opinion, if you don't know if you need one or not, you probably don't need it :P

I wouldn't necessarily put Professional and Jessops together. ;)

Cue replies from Jessops staff. :lol:

Worth going into Jessops just to see what price they would charge for one. ;) :lol:

You may still be unsure whether you need one, but for the prices in the links indicated earlier it's worth giving it a try.

The major lens manufacturers would not go to the expense of including them if they weren't useful. The reason you don't have one is because they chose to save money on your lens after all. ;)

They are called Petal hoods, and yes I would invest in one, they help protect your lens from knocks & reduce glare etc.

If the front of the lens rotates when focusing (and I think maybe the OP's kit lens does) then you can't use a petal hood - only a round one.
