Buy Sigma 300mm f2.8 or keep Canon 300mm f4?

Hi all - I've been thinking of getting rid of my Canon 300mm f4 and replacing this with a Sigma 300mm f2.8 (can't afford the Canon one yet!). Does anyone have any experience as to the image quality with this lens? Am I likely to lose much IQ when using the 300mm f2.8 with say a 1.4 or 2x TC? I like the idea of 420mm at f4, but not got much experience with Sigma lenses apart from my macro (which is actually pin sharp).

Any advise is much appreciated.

I changed from a nikon 300mm f4 AF-S to the Sigma 300mm f2.8 and have found it great, not as sharp as a Nikon or Canon 300mm f2.8 but good enough. I tend to find that by f3.5 it's sharp. I have used it with a 1.4tc and the IQ doesn't seem to be effected, I have not tried the 2x but would like to see if anyone else has and what it is like as well.

Hi Gareth

I used one for nearly 18 months with a 1.4 and 2x tcon.Worked brilliantly with the 1.4 and ok ish with the 2x.It's avery good cheaper alternative to the big white L.There's probably thousands of pics up on my site taken with the lens.

Here's one from 2008 taken with the 300 and Kenko 2X tcon on a 40D.

Cheers Gary for info and the photos. This is the sort of thing I'll be using it for. I've been to our local camera shop today to have a look at both the 300mm prime and also the 120-300mm f2.8. I had a play with both on my camera body and to be honest, the zoom lens seemed slightly sharper.
They are both big heavy lenses, the zoom being a right lump. I'm not sure now which way to go out of these two.

PS - Nice shots Gary. Are these in the Lakes? They don't look like the Loop to me.

I have read many reports saying the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 is sharper than the sigma 300mm F2.8 prime.

I know my 120-300mm was supremely sharp and performed flawlessly with a 1.4x
