Well the other half is twisting my arm to go on holiday somewhere in February. I was never the best flyer but i have recently been on a fear of flying course and wouldnt mind seeing if i can be "ok" with flying.

Now we are thinking of going to New York and with that in mind i want to get the best possible photos. I am going to be getting a Tamron 18-270 sometime soon but i dont know if this will be good enough for the type of photos i want (Landscape and the odd photo around NY) so here is what i was thinking:

Option 1 :
Buy a Canon 24-105L second hand, take it with me to NY, hope i do not fall in love with it and then sell it on when i come back, hopefully for near enough the same as i bought it for.

Option 2:
Rent the Canon 24-105L for a week. This currently costs £62.

My thought is that with option 1 am i likely to lose £62 in a short pace of time on this lens? Would buying a second hand L lens be a wise choice as it could have had professional use?

My thought with option 2 is that it is over 10% of the cost of what they go on the second hand market and option 1 looks better, however the lens will be insured.

What do you think?
 
If you've got the cash buy a used 24-70L, if you love it after your trip... keep it, if not flog it and you'll most likely get all of your money back.

If cash is a bit tight then hire it, if you love it after your trip then save a little longer and buy a used one but at least you know you really really want that lens long term.

So for me, it simply comes down to if you have the spare cash to buy a used one now or not.
 
I just want awesome quality photos tbh. I would be buying and selling it within the same month so it should not be too much of a problem for me to do it that way. Is there another alternative i should look at? I picked the 24-105 because of the range it offers and it has IS.
 
17-55mm f2.8 seems a good option with your 400d if you want to rent. 24mm on a crop body might not be wide enough for landscapes:thinking:. TBH I'd stick with what you've got already unless you're looking for an excuse to upgrade;)
 
My apologies, misread your post and thought it was the 24-70 you were talking about (probably as I have one myself!)

24-105L is no doubt a great lens but I believe many consider the 24-70L to be that little bit better and neatly matches up with a 70-200L in some peoples kits. As you say a consideration is IS on the 24-105 but then it's only f4 so as always there is a tradeoff and it comes down to preference of f vs. IS.

If whatever you go for is second hand then you should have no trouble selling it for what you paid a month later. I'm often surprised at the price of used L glass when compared to new prices as it's often only a small percentage less!

Oh, and if this is just an interim thing before you get the Tamron then don't be surprised if you fall in love with the L glass, it's something special for sure ;)

Agree. 24mm on a crop body isn't wide enough for city photography.
 
Regardless of what focal length you end up with and if you have the cash, option one all the way.
 
Why buy 2 lenses and then sell one? Either get a 24-105 (or whatever you decide) and don't get the tamron, or just get the tamron and use it. Your plan just sounds like it will waste money either way! Don't forget, a lens won't make your photos 'awesome' (that is your job!), perhaps just a little sharper and with less CA.
 
Obviously I'm biased, Dylan, so I won't offer an opinion on your main question.

But I'll agree with the others that 24mm is nowhere near wide enough for a trip to New York. I would take a 10-22mm. Failing that, if I wanted one do-it-all lens I'd go for the EF-S 15-85mm or the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8.
 
Go to Adorama when you arrive in NY, collect the used 24-105L currently in stock for $964 which you have paid for in advance on your credit card. Use it around NY, bring it back and sell it for more than you paid for it.
 
how much sharper would the 24-105 be in comaprison to the Tamron? I know what you are saying in that 24mm may not be wide enough, but i dont want to go for a 15-85 as i have a 17-85 atm, and i dont want to go for a 17-55f2.8 becuase it doesnt have as much reach.

I am after reach and quality.
 
Extra reach=less sharp. If you don't think the tamron will be good enough for new York, why the hell would it be right for the rest of the time? If you want sharp it's 2 lenses. If you want one, versatile superzoom you lose the sharpness. The 24-105 isn't a superzoom by any stretch but will be better than the tammy. If you can afford it buy 1 good lens to use now. Don't bank on not losing too much money with the whole buy and sell routine.
 
Done similar things, buy use and sell and if your lucky you can sometimes make a profit selling them on eBay. Good luck with you quest and have a great time in the Big Apple.
