If you had the opportunity to buy a second hand 40D at a good price, would you do it? Why?

What's the maximum you would pay for it?

OK let me rephrase this, I am a beginner photographer with no (DSLR) camera at the moment.
So you (the more experienced and knowledgeable photographer) would you buy a 40d if you were in my situation and why?
 
If it fits your budget then yes , I think it's a great camera for the money and as a beginner I think it will take you a long time to out grow it.
Of course depending what your using it for .
 
40d Is great camera and if you never had DSLR I would consider a bit less advanced camera which can cost you less than 40d, and the spare money you can use to buy a lens for you to start of. Because camera is only a half of the story you need a lens so the price for 40d is irrelevant if you dont have lenses.
 
Its a brilliant camera, go for it. I bought a 50D, should have bought the 40 instead,much better value for money.
 
I bought one just over a week ago off the forum for £225 as a backup/spare to my 5D3.
Overall very impressed. OK it's not great at anything over ISO800 noise wise, but i used it for my sons football match yesterday and it performed faultlessly! probably had over 90% keeper rate which was better than my 5D or my previous 7D!!!!
For a first camera you can't go wrong.
As it's getting on for a DSLR now, i'd buy from a dealer so you'd get a warranty.
 
Yes, I would buy a 40D.... I have one, and, in some instances(woodland photography for instance) it's a camera I choose instead of my 7D....I use mine mainly for birds and wildlife though.....
 
It is a great camera imo, I had a 350D to start with but found it too small in my hands much prefer the 40D, as a starting point at a good price you cannot go far wrong, I would say £250 max, does it come with anything like a lens to get you started as this is obviously going to increase costs for you.

Hi Fabien

Yes, certainly would buy it, I've one and it's a very capable camera and am very pleased with it. If it's a good price and within your budget, then yes go for it, it will do you well...
 
A good camera that can be enjoyed. Check - cosmetic condition, seller statement that everything works, shutter count. Price £200 +, body only.

I have heard the high ISO setting may be an issue. In which situations this camera reach its limits?

The only time I have noticed iso issues is basically down to me due to type of photography, shoot birds a fair bit so quite often in a situation to get shutter speed up, iso above 800 underexposing and large mount of cropping, the latter two will not help noise issues, having said that at iso 1600 I have had some decent results provided none or small amount of cropping involved.
 
i took my 40D into the pub i work in last fri night, turned out there were some bands on upstairs so i popped up to test it out.
Only had my 24-105mm F4 with me which wasn't an ideal lens to use so had to use 1600/H ISO and the images were a bit noisy, but that's comparing to my 5D3 which is exceptionally good at high ISO!!
I'll try to post a few images up (take into account i'm just a hobbyist!)

BTW MPB have quite a few 40D's for sale around the £250 mark, all with 6 months warranty and free postage.

@ Fabian.
Only limits for me is ISO 1600 (+) as others have said, however that still may be usable for web publishing and smaller prints (10x8?), especially if you are will to do a bit of nose reduction. If buying a 40D just make sure it has a lowish shutter count (mine has more than 222,000) It is a good camera.

#1 ISO 1600 1/125 @ F2 and f=135mm, hand held with avaiable light. Some NR (and vignetting) would have been done when PPing the original RAW file.

I would buy a 40D without a doubt. In my opinion it is he best of the xxD series. I have had four of them over the years and will no doubt get another when I find one at a good price. Decent AF system, useable upto ISO1600 if you get the exposure right. As for price I wouldn't pay over £200 for one body only.
