Buying a new camera - camera guarantees

I am about to purchase a new DSLR camera. One shop has offered three years' cover which I would have to pay for.

A camera website says that they have a three year whatever happens care plan I could opt for if I buy a DSLR from them.

I thought that the law said that consumers have a guarantee anyway when they buy some items - such as cameras?

Does anyone reading this know what the position is on this? Why should I pay for cover when there is a guarantee anyway?

I would be grateful for any advice on this. I would like to know what you did when if/when you bought a new DSLR? Did you have to pay for cover or did you not pay for cover and just rely on the guarantee under consumer law?

If you did pay for cover - perhaps something like the whatever happens plan referred to above - how much was it and was it for one year or more?

I would like to know - before I purchase a new DSLR - what my rights in consumer law are and whether I should pay for cover.

Thank you.

All new camera bodies bought in the UK from a UK supplier have 1 year warranty included in the price. What they are trying to sell you is an extended warranty which you must pay for. If they are asking you to purchase a warranty from day one they are 1/ at it, or 2/ selling imported goods that come with no UK warranty.

Buyer beware.

are you in the UK?
Assuming yes, is the camera that you are looking at a genuine UK manufacturer imported one or a "grey import"?

You will get a 12 or 24 month warranty depending on manufacturer etc.

I presume most people take out seperate insurance or cover it within their contents insurance. Insurance will also cover accidental damage.

I pay £32 for approx £1000 worth of cover for camera and lenses out and about.

One shop says that when I buy a camera the product guarantee gives me cover for mechanical and electrical failure of the DSLR I purchase. It then tells me that its Whatever Happens Care Plan provides "more comprehensive" cover.

If I paid for the Whatever Happens Care plan cover for three years that could be at least £159.99 extra not including any additional cover for any lens I might purchase (I need a new wide angle lens).

I wonder what readers of this did if/when they bought a new DSLR camera. Did you just rely on the 12 month guarantee - or did you pay for extra cover like the plan referred to above?

So I will get the 12 or 24 months guarantee automatically and I will then have to sort out insurance cover for theft.

So should I also pay at least £159.99 for three years "more comprehensive" cover (quote from my last posting to this thread where I referred to a shop's Whatever Happens Care Plan).
