Ok, I'd like a 50mm prime, nothing expensive or 'good' as it's just for some experimentation. I'm looking for something with a minimum of F1.8 or so, and it's for a Nikon D50. Less than a hundred quid really.

Any suggestions and advice?

Thanks.

The nifty fifty can be had for £79 new, was some supply problems the other week though. Have you tried site mailing Kerso to see what his price is?

Noticed a poster in the vr club thread has one for sale according to his signature, worth a pm i'd say!

Thanks, but I'm after a new one. Just waiting for Kerso to get back to me. I've just invoiced a magazine for a couple of (v. small) photos they used of mine, so that's paying for it. As I told the other half, anything I make from my hobby goes back into it!!

As Joe says the 50mm on Nikon's digital's gives the same angle of view as a 75mm on 35mm film. The Nikon DSLR equivalent of a 50mm standard lens on 35mm film would be a 33.3mm, or the nearest available to this focal length.

The standard lens on any format used to be the diagonal of the film frame or sensor which was supposed to give the same angle of view as the human eye, though some dispute this.

Nikon do a 35/2 which is a lovely little lens, but to get one for around £100 you'd need to go second-hand. In the case of the 35/2 I wouldn't recommend doing that because some of the older models leak lubricant onto the blades.

I think that 50 is still a perfectly usable focal length on a Nikon DSLR though.

The 50/1.8 and 50/1.4 are both excellent choices and I've seen optically very good but tatty copies of the latter go for around £100 used. While the 50/1.4 is probably a shade better from what I've seen of them, particularly in terms of rendering oof areas, the 1.8 is a very, very, good lens in it's own right and a ridiculous bargain even when bought new for the quality you'd be getting.

There has been supply problems for ages, mine was the last in stock from the shop i got it from and that was after phoning about 5 for them to say they had none :/

Tis very popular!
