Buying advice

Evening all,

After deciding to upgrade my camera, I finally sold my D40x on here (from which I've learnt a great deal and will hopefully do the same for it's new owner). Whilst the D300 is very appealing and can be had for a great price right now, I've decided to go for a D90. I prefer the smaller size more than anything and it has almost everything the D300 has in terms of spec.

Now, my question is this. Do I wait for Nikon's new cameras in this coming year so that they push the price of the D90 down? Like the D400 perhaps? I realise that this isn't going to compete with the D90 but it will surely help in driving the prices down.

I'm a bit of a sporadic photographer. I went one or two months without reaching for the camera. Then, a few opportunities arose and this rekindled my enthusiasm and has spurred the sale (and the inevitable purchase) or my camera. I'm worried that the D90 will be 'too good' for what I need. Though I felt as though I went as far as I could with the D40x.

Your thoughts are most welcome.

Thanks for reading

Dave

If you can afford it now buy it now. That's my philosophy. Your just depriving yourself otherwise.

Enjoy!

If you can wait it will go down in price, or will we have another bank crises and it becomes dearer..............

Buy it now and enjoy it........ doesn't the D90 have movie mode.

It was compared to the D300 in amature Photography mag and came out as "if you do not need the better build and weather proof and programing capabilities The D90 is the better buy"

if you wait you are bound to end up spending more on a D300.:suspect:

Thanks for the replies chaps. I sort of knew this would the case. I just didn't want to overlook something obvious that's all. Have been thinking about making the upgrade to a D90 for while now :)

Cheers

I'd say go for it, the D90 is a fantastic camera, even when its successor comes out it will be much more expensive and so it isn't going to devalue overnight. That's the logic I used to justify my D700 anyway :D

i would buy a s/h d300 without a thought its a better camera imho

Why don't you just buy second hand? BH Photo Video has Nikon 2X's, Canon 1DIIn's, 1Ds' and many others under the $1000 (US) mark. Buying new, unless you want a warranty, is wholly expensive and the depreciation value is terrible.

I agree with other posters, with all technology the temptation is to wait until prices come down, but you could wait forever. My advice would be- do it now - you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Thanks again for the replies. My intention was to buy second hand. I was quite tempted by the D90 and lens on here but funds are a bit tight this month due to my car playing up.... :(

This is exactly right, indeed DxOMark rates the D90 the best performing sensor in crop cameras, beating the D300, probably because the D90 is a year younger design and they had time to refine the sensor electronics. The D300 does add some very subtle extra features (like shutter or focus priority AF), but unless you know you need the extra bits or will be outdoors in the rain a lot, the D90 will make pictures that look as good or better, for a significant cost saving. And it's a fair bit lighter and smaller - macho posing aside, I find this a desirable feature.
