Hi,

I'm just after advice really, it's a private sale and therefore no warranty.

What should I look for if I decide to go and test the lens, it's a 300mm 2.8 L.

Thanks for any advice.

Same as any other lens. Make sure everything functions as expected, make sure zoom and focus rings are smooth, check cosmetic condition for scratches, bumps, peeling rubber grips etc and check the optics. Check for scratches, fungus and dust. Also see what accessories should come with the lens (caps, hood, case etc) and see if they're present, and if not whether this bothers you.

Also, take some test pictures and examine them looking for obvious signs of flaws, or decentering etc.

I've always bought used lenses and the precautions I've taken have always served me well.
  • Closely inspect the glass on both ends for chips or scratches (these won't necessarily effect the image, but will affect resale value).
  • Check for dings and scratches - again these can affect resale value.
  • Make sure all rings turn smoothly by hand - do this fast and slow.
  • Look through the lens to make sure it's clear of debris and fungus.
  • Put it on your camera and take some test shots at all apertures.
  • Check all switches work.
  • Check rubber seals (if it has them).

Check the focus limiter works too. Also if its the IS version check IS is working as it should.

You don't say which version this lens is but Canon do eventually stop supporting the older lenses so it might be a good idea to investigate this.
