Buying Equipment in Singapore

Yes
A friend came over before and mentioned that he's off to Singapore soon. I'm after a new lens does anyone know if it's worthwhile sending him on a mission to find it for me? I've looked online and I can't find any Singapore shops that actually have any prices!

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you discuss with him what happens if he's stopped at Customs on the way back. If he's bought you a lens because it's, say, 15% cheaper out there, but then he has to pay 28% import duty and VAT, it could get awkward.

OK, it's unlikely, but what if he hits a random spot check? Or - even more awkward - something in his demeanour or behaviour attracts a not-random spot check?

It's only a cheap lens circa $300 or I can but it from HDEW for £215 not a 400mm L lens or the like. Surely the lens is for his camera at home? With regards to tax, a little reading last night seems to imply that he can even claim buyers tax paid on the lens at the airport.

Last time I brought an camera in Singapore,it was a few years ago I was told I could claim any tax back when I got home, just send them the bill.
Guess what I never heard from them

Just go to Sim Lim Square and haggle.

He'll be able to claim back the 7% GST before he leaves in most cases. You're right though.... you could well get clobbered with import duty and VAT upon return.
