Hi guys,

I am a newbie here :), and have been researching a bit into buying my first DSLR camera (when I should really be revising for my exams). The prices are pretty similar, but I'd just like to know whether there are any advantages of buying from the photo-stores e.g. Jessops - will they offer to help me to fix the thing if I have a problem? I have a feeling that if I hand my D40 to Dixons they will just give me the finger or something :)

Thank you!

You have the same rights in the event of a warranty repair regardless of where you buy from. It is easier though to go into a store and talk to someone and let them sort it rather than having the hassle of posting it back to an internet supplier.

Thanks :) Would you know if the Jessops/Jacobs guys would be happy to do it in the store? :) Or do they all, including dixons, pcworld etc?

I'd be very surprised if any of them repair it themselves, it'd be shipped off to an authorised Canon repair center.

Sometimes the larger chains, like jessops and Dixons will replace the camera outright depending on the age.

Having worked for Dixons and PC World, generally the age of the camera if something goes wrong depends on whether or not you would get a straight out swap. [Normally after 28days it has to be sent away]
They generally go away from store, to an authorised repairer who generally posts the item back to you.
My memory card unit went kaput on my old kodak digi, I think I was without it for about 3-weeks.
If you decided to take out the insurance with either of these companies they will either replace or repair it. Generally the latter.
However. If the said item, is away longer than 6 weeks, you can demand a new product. Or if it comes back and develops the same fault again, and is sent away again you can get a new product. [Generally vouchers to the price of likewise spec item].

I always take it out with my Laptops. And generally its a good thing. Cos Ive normally had a new laptop every 2years due to it breaking down [and costing more to fix it than to replace it] because of over-use.

At the end of the day its upto you where you take it. But a lot of the time peope who work in these "specialist" shops....know basic product knowledge. And I know I'd rather have it fixed by a professional rather than some monkey.

Hope that helped.

I used to work for DSG (Dixons Stores Group), many moons ago! If the product is faulty within 28 days, they will replace it there and then! There-after it goes away for repair! (as dellipher has already pointed out)

Check if your home policy covers you against things that Dixons insurance plans duplicates. In all honest there are certain products I would take it out on, such as washing machines as there guaranteed to go wrong.... look at the amount of movin parts in one of those! I have insurance plan's on my cameras as its wise imo but check around first as you may be able find cheaper insurance out there...

Ok. Thanks everyone. So it doesn't really matter where you get it from :D Kinobe and Dellipher - can i just ask you - if I get it from the online dixons store (cheaper beacuse of many discount codes lying around the internet), can i still use the services on the counter?

That can depend on the person serving you, but alot of the time I couldnt see a problem as to why. I personally used to. [But I also worked with people who wouldnt]

What types of counter services are you talking about? And most stores will match their online prices [I got mine from jessops]

I did the very same...

I found some official jessops hidden discount vouchers which saved me another "so much" (cannot remember now heheh) But bought it online and picked it up in store. They send you a text to let you know when its ready....

However arrived at Jessops and they basically have to replicate the deal through their tills.....they couldn't seem to find the discount code... hmmmmm. I basically said to I've travelled 60 miles to pick a camera I have purchased at this price "display's text" After a while they brought out the manager.... and in the end she'd been silly not to discount it as afterall its money through the till.... Sale went through... and well I ended up with another cheaper DSLR than they advertised!

If its an official discount code, write that down and bring it with you, will save all the rigmarole...

I woulden't buy from Jessops, they are pretty expensive.

You can get MUCH cheaper items online and in some high-street stores.

Online is easily the cheapest and easist way to buy camera equipment. Even Amazon.co.uk have some good deals on there. I was looking for a 40D and they have one for £700 which is a good price compared to high street stores.

Just shop around, you will definatly be able to find someone cheaper than Jessops.

It's not worth spending more at Jessops, they don't really offer you anything more than anywhere else or anywhere online. Plus the people in the stores never know anything about cameras.

Dixons will pricematch too. I got my D40X with kit lens from them in July and paid £370 (not including rebate ( that i still haven't got)) which was a barn door cheaper than anywhere else at the time. They price matched over the phone no problem.

Don't know if this helps

Bought my 400d from jessops on a price match at the end of August, I wasn’t to happy with the pictures all being a bit soft eventually decided it was the camera and not me, so took it back in November and they exchanged it with no Questions.

Jessops are expensive in general but you'll find they're trying to get competitive. Some products you'll find cheaper, plus find some discount codes and you may find you've picked yourself a bargain...

Buy Online, collect in store is a massive success and something I'm going to do more in the future. Any problems? well its just the case of popping back to the shop...

eBBAAAYYYYYY for me, lol. Or Amazon.co.uk. Warranty still in effect from either.

I got my D40 kit (18-55mm) from jessops for £299 and then reclaimed the £30 cashback from nikon. Can't find a D40 for anywhere near£269 anywhere on t'internet. Also because the camera was under £300, Jessops 3 year extended warranty was only £30

Hope this helps
