If you make a private sale of a camera with warranty stil on it.. how do you use that warranty.? to be clear.. private sale being person to person..

With most manufacturers the warranty is not transferable to a new owner so, unless you offer to handle warranty issues personally, the buyer won't have a warranty. You'd need to check on the manufacturer's website to be sure whether a warranty can be transferred.

:agree: with above,a person can offer to handle any warranty issues for you,but if you lose contact with the buyer,or he changes his mind their not much you can do about it.

Exactly as I thought.. but always good to check with people who know or experience or know someone or whatever.... OK thanks sorted :)

Its a grey area. That I may have to spend some time and use some googlefu. Its the Item itself that has the warranty. Not the owner. If I buy a lens for you as a birthday present the warranty is still intact.

I buy a lens it comes with a 12 month warranty

If I own a shop and buy from the manufacturer and sell it to you in my shop. Your actually the 2nd owner, So would that mean the warranty is void.

I'm off to spend some time in the googleverse

Edit to add more:

Guarantee and warranty appear to be different.

You are correct in saying that it is the 'item' that has the warranty, but surely when you then register the item (to start the warranty period), you are then assigning your name to that warranty. It is the registered name and address that Nikon/Canon would deal with in regards to any issues that arise with the item.

If it's a Canon body, they're not bothered a hoot as long as you have a receipt proving date of purchase with serial No on it.

Speaking from experience :)

Once you've registered the product you no longer need the original receipt. If you don't register then you do. Not to prove ownership but to prove its DOP is still within the 12 months (guarantee period)

I'm still researching though

Kipax, just register it under your CPS account. Then provide the proof of purchase to show that it’s within the warranty period should you have to utilise it. I did this with a mk2 telephoto lens and Elstree were fine with it.

I think that body should also have a two year warranty on it as well, so keep any bumf that relates to that. Again Elstree honoured that for me on my 1D mkIV which had an end of line promotional 2 year warranty - the Jacobs Digital receipt I had didn't have a serial number on it either.

I did just buy a used 1dx with 18 mths left on warranty.. it does have a proper UK retailers reciept.. the seller I ahve absoloutly no doubt will help wiht warranty if any problems (which I dont foresee) but was thinking out loud if you will.. just wondering if anything i ahvent thought of.. I have registered it with CPS an am already at platinum level.. but the address on the reciept isnt my address so ?

See my post, been there done that with no issues

CHANGE OF ADDRESS AND NAME ?..THEY HAVE ME ON THE CPS SYSTEM WHICH I WOULD NEED TO USE ....ooops caps lock. sorry..

Registering for warranty aside. I never seen my name nor address on a shop receipt.

Obviously your situation is different with CPS but I would have thought that providing you can provide proof of purchase which has the original DOP then how could they say it wasn't bought as a gift

Most manufacturers warranty terms say something like "the purchaser or the person for whom it was bought as a gift". Canon are an odd one - back when I used Canon gear their terms strictly said "original purchaser only", but they largely ignored that and fixed things under warranty anyway. Sigma, on the other hand, seemed to do whatever they could to avoid warranty repair :-(

It is down to each manufacturer to state their terms and that will be in the warranty booklet provided with the product.

Canon are pretty good, others are not.

Fuji were extremely good to me when I had to claim on an extended warranty (extended after the X-10's original sensor was dealt with after an orbing issue). The day before the extended warranty expired, the lens (also the on/off switch) jammed closed... A quick call to CS and an e-mail to register the problem brought a well padded box and a pre-paid envelope to my door. Less than a week later I had the camera back in my hands with another 3 months warranty. Unfortunately, again on the point of that period expiring, the same fault occurred. Again, I had the box and envelope (duplicates, after a slight mix up when they were sent to the camera's original owner) and had the fixed camera back in my paws a few days later (with another 3 months of warranty, thankfully not needed this time!)

However, if said warranty is 'not transferable' then returning it to the 1st owner to bypass the 'not transferable' terms of the warranty would breach it anyway ... just saying :)

Looks like guarantee is only normally valid between retailer and purchaser (unless a gift) but does not cover non authorised agents (2nd hand resellers)

If you look at warranty T's & C's on the Canon UK site, there is NO mention of a warranty being non transferable.

Interesting... it used to say something like "the purchaser or the person for whom it was bought as a gift". I've not had Canon gear for a couple of years, though, so haven't been following what they're up to. It looks like they've updated their terms to agree with their practice :)

Think they have. All my bodies & lenses are Canon and what with the cost of them etc, warranty details are things I check/read up on. Sad I know:(

time for an email to my CPS rep i think :)

Nearly a week and still no answer.. got automated response the query sent.... maybe I need to own more than 18+ thousand pounds worth of canon equipment.. then maybe they would give me some attention :(
