Presently shooting with a Canon 5D Mk1 and using two 4gig SanDisk Ultra 30MB/s cards.

I fancy getting a couple of bigger SanDisk 8gig c.flash cards, any suggestions for a slightly higher speed writing?

I'm using a basic USB cable from my 5D to laptop to view photo's, it's very slow to load/view jpeg's, any quicker way I need to know about I could look at might you'se know please? Is a card reader quicker/better/faster to increase speed?

Thanks in advance!

Try a cheap USB card reader, not sure if its faster but could be. Maybe the faster cards will help too, I use the 60MB/sec sandisk extreme cards and even a 32GB doesn't take too long, sorry but I've never timed it so couldn't say exactly but under 10 minutes I think.

You used to be able to get a firewire card reader, which would be better I imagine if you have firewire. If anyone knows if you can get one I would be interested myself.

For the life if me I don't understand why computers don't come with a CF slot? Especially ones like the iMac and macbook pro etc. which are very popular with photographers and video guys, they have an SD slot, firewire 800, bit no CF slot.

I have a Sandisk Extreme firewire card reader and it's removed all the drag of uploading images to the PC - it's very fast. Your laptop needs a firewire port obviously, but even if you don't have one, just get a USB card reader (USB2) or above and you'll see a marked difference.

Card readers are a must imo - no more cables all over the place and the risk of your camera getting dragged off the work surface. No battery power in the camera needed either - card readers take their power from the PC.

A card reader will be a lot faster than piping the images in straight from the camera. But changing to faster cards will make zero difference. Your camera can't even write to a 30 MB/s card at fill speed and, if you use a USB reader, that won't be going any faster than around 30 MB/s.

What size is a 5dmk1 file? maybe about 10MB for a raw? 3fps, yeh, i wouldn't worry about 30MB/sec cards. The bottleneck there will be the camera buffer/processor i'm fairly sure.

Cameras tend to be slow over USB for some reason, don't think i've ever seen a camera that is faster than a cheap usb2 card reader. Also the other advantage the card readers have is they don't need power (or rather draw it from the pc) Once or twice i've used my camera via USB and the battery ran out! :D That was... annoying :D
