That’s an excellent album and shows what can be taken with very basic equipment. However if your going for the bright studio portrait look then you would have to at least add some lighting to that iPhone.

That might be true with an iPhone. With any other camera it's quite possible to produce lovely high key work with natural light. It does mean being slightly limited as to location & time of day - but only slightly.
 
I’ve definitely learnt from today and that is that equipment is key!

No it isn't.

Two things are key
1. Interacting with the subject
2. Understanding light

You can get a remarkable photo of your child with a D850, thousands of ££S of lenses and lights, backgrounds, cakes and baubles....

Or with an iPhone.

The photo is successful if it’s well composed, well lit and captures the subject.

The more gear you have available (if you aren’t competent with it) the more possibilities of doing something wrong.
