The 1936 VEF Minox Riga is a fascinating camera—the smallest of its time. Its crucial component is its lens: the Minostigmat.

For the past two years, I’ve been studying this specific lens. I began by conducting practical experiments and measurements using test photos.

Over the last five months, I’ve devoted all my efforts to understanding its design and the theory behind it. The breakthrough came in May, when I finally gained access to the manufacturing drawings.

This allowed me to calculate the optical properties myself—both its outstanding qualities as well as its only weak point. Finally it was a fascinating experience to work through the manual calculation of this Cooke triplet.
