I have been asked to shoot a "calendar girl" style calendar for a local Am Dram group.
It will be shot in the local Village Hall, with a small set of mobile lighting and back drop etc. They like the finshed pics in B&W.
What woudl the ideal "studio" set up be ? Use a white or black back drop ? Shoot straight in B&W. I have a small soft box and umbralla set up.
Any advice would help.

Not sure if this is the right "section" to ask this question, please free to move it.

My tennis club shot and produced a "Calendar Girls" calendar a few years ago. Rather than shoot in a studio they shot in a broad range of locations, including their own homes, doing the things they love doing - baking, gardening, sunbathing - and with a variety of props. Personally I think that type of approach would be much closer to the original concept, but it's your/their choice. Most of the pictures were taken by the women themselves, but here's an example shot by me....

There is a terrific photo of one of our more impressively endowed ladies reclining in a wheelbarrow in her back garden with just her wellies and gardening gloves on on, plus a full set of sparkly jewels. It's a brilliant photo, but not mine to share. :(

(A year or two before that they also shot "Calendar Boys".)

Rather than shoot straight to B&W why not shoot to raw and have the freedom to produce colour, black and white, sepia or anything else without limiting your options.

Great shot. But unfortunately our ladies are not that brave as to go outside and so want to base it around "putting on a show" ie Directors chair, costumes, make up, lighting etc etc...so have to have a "studio set up"
Yes I will be shooting in Raw, so agree to your point :)
White or black back drop ?

That seems like a fair plan. It might be a pain, but what about half against white and half against black? Mind you, the printers will probably prefer white. I believe white ink is cheaper than black. ;)

Those 2 sentences are contradictory:
The first looks interesting, the 2nd looks like a photographers compromise.

As per all the other good calendar shots you've seen, treat each shot as a project in itself, not something you should be thinking you can set up and knock off in an afternoon.

It certainly wasnt set up and knocked off in an afternoon, the scenes are all planned prior to the shoot....very happy with the results, as were all the ladies :)
