We've experienced a couple of Calima events here in Tenerife but yesterday's was something different altogether.
At 1.45pm it was fine..temperature at 29/30C. We were on our balcony. Guests were around the pool on loungers under sun brollies. At 2.00pm there was a wind roar from the east (Africa) . The palm trees bent ,towels were blown around and the staff hurriedly took down all brollies. Guests also did this. The temperature soared to 34C . The two chairs on our balcony were 'pushed' along. The gusts were up to 40mph and the wind howling. A small metal lightweight table crashed into the leg of a guest on a poolside lounger and the First Aiders called for paramedics. After bandaging her lower leg she was helped away from the pool area. We took our balcony table/chairs into the room. Today, I spoke to a poolside attendant and he said that on one occasion a table was lifted from a balcony and over the glass front, crashing to ground level. The wind persisted like this for a couple of hours and then calmed. At 6.30pm we got a knock on the door and asked to take the table/chairs inside but we'd done it which pleased the member of staff who was going door to door and if no answer went in and took them into the room. At about 7.00pm the winds returned until 1.00am. The balcony sliding doors rattled loudly and ,once again, the winds roared/howled. The clouds were strange, too so I got some photos at sunset ..8.30-9.00pm. ..but had to stand just by the doors inside the room rather than go to the rail/glass panels. The noise kept us awake until it all died down. The only time I've experienced anything like that was standing out in the open in Oklahoma/ Kansas in a storm inflow. The low pressure of the storm sucked air in towards it and it, too was very warm air.
Today, the sun brollies came down again at 11.00am. There were gusts now and then but nothing like yesterday. Staff weren't taking any chances, though. I'm surprised they were caught out yesterday, tbh. I've seen them take brollies down on a few occasions before strong gusts arrive. Last time we were here..six weeks ago..the winds blew a metal sun lounger into the pool when there was no-one in it..late evening, I think , which is why I was surprised some guests carried on swimming yesterday,or,at least, were allowed to. They were lulled into a false sense of security by the sudden calm periods. It can be calm one minute and very strong winds the next.
