What is this? I thought it might be a Giant Hawkmoth caterpillar but all the ones I've seen previously have not been hairy. He's about 4cms long.

Thank you. Now I have a name I have looked it up. I haven't seen the moth itself often recently but I seem to remember seeing them many years ago in some abundance. I found this one crawling up my next door neighbours wall and since there was nowhere for it to go I abducted it and found what I hope is a more hospitable environment in a Cornish hedge that has both rocks and dense plants in it.
