Very basic stuff this for someone who knows what they are doing!

I am installing a 2.5mm socket into a flash, very simple stuff. I know where to connect the jumper wires inside the flash, but embarrassingly I don't know where to solder them onto the socket!

It's a standard 2.5mm socket from Maplins. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I've attached at the moment to 1 and 3 but I have a funny feeling this may be wrong. I think 4 is just the connector for when the plug is inserted.

Here, have a very detailed and fantastically accurate view of what I'm talking about!

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Depends on what you are doing? What are plugging in? and do you have multimeter?

Either 1, 2 or 3 will be directly connected to 4 so use that one

Then whichever is left from 1, 2 & 3 that is connected to the surround use that one.

if that makes sense :)

First off, I don't envy you, those 2.5mm jack sockets are fiddly as hell!

Put a 2.5mm plug into it and follow the connections back to which terminals they go to is the easiest way. The 'ring' around the back of the jack plug (ie the bit that goes into the socket last) is probably just attached to the front bit of metal .

4 is probably attached to one of the solder terminals, and if it's touching the very end of the jack plug when it's in, then that's the other one to attach to :)

Post a few pictures and I can probably point out what's what...

I'll be plugging in the 2.5mm plug from a remote trigger. And yes I do have a multimeter. Hmm, I may see where you are going with this...

Blimey, I need new eyes or glasses. I can't see what is attached to where!

I'll see what I can do on pics. No macro lens but I have some close up lenses somewhere I think...

Cheers all for your help!

Use the mm to check the continuity to the back of the plug i.e. unscrew the plug and plug it into the socket and meter from the terminals (1,2,3) to the connections, then if you know which wire is for what you will know where to solder to

Ah, it's not that end I know where the wires go! I know that inside the flash you solder the two jumper wires to centre pin and outer and I know which two connections that is.

nb. You may also have noticed my other thread where I'm asking for an old 540EZ bottom as I may have used my initial one as practice ahem ...I'm sure it is repairable but now I know what I'm doing with that bit it'd be easier to start afresh...

Look at the socket side on, the connections are like layers. One layer will connect to 4 & another will connect to the surround .

The trigger plug will most probably just be acting as a switch! so you only need to find the terminal that connects to 4 with the mm
