Hi,

I know I can change all this is in PP anyway, but I was looking at changing some of the defaults on my 50D to get sharper and more saturated pics straight out of camera.

My question will the "Sharpeness" increased make any difference as it is a RAW file? The other options are "Contrast", "Saturation", and "Colour Tone" I want better "Greens" and "Blues" so I Imagine I need to alter the Saturation?

Of course I could just experiment but I would like to know for sure I am approaching this right -

I see a lot of posts on here that just look better in terms of Greens & Blues sure they could also come form PP results but I would like to see if I can avoid hours of PP by getting better in camera images.

In a word no, these setting refer to jpeg images.

To be clear, yes, because Picture Styles, and any other in-camera pre-sets, apply to the JPEG and not to the Raw.

Have a go. Picture Styles are intended to do just what you want, so you don't have to post process.

If you process with Canon DPP software, any picture style settings you have set are automatically applied to the raw image when you open it in DPP. If you then click the 'TOOL' icon at the top left of the screen you get a drop-down menu from which you should select the 'RAW' option. Yoiu're then free to discard the picture style settings, change to any other picture style settings you wish, or take full manual control of all editing parameters

If you shoot with any raw software other than DPP, this picture style info is not recognized and is discarded. That's my understanding, although I'm open to be corrected.

If it's any help at all, I use the 'Faithful' picture setting in-camera, as I've found it gives the most natural looking colour for me which I prefer (having tried all the others)

Different picture style settings do give markedly different results though, depending on your personal preference, and sometimes what your subject is, so it's worth experimenting to see what suits you best.

Worth noting that most (all?) bodies apply the JPEG settings to the preview you see on your camera's LCD even if you're shooting in raw-only mode. For that reason you might find it easier to assess focus if you bump up sharpness a little in your settings.
