Hi all,

A mate at work wants to buy his parents a hand held HD camcorder for their ruby wedding anniversary.

No real idea on budget yet but suggestions around the £300 and the £500 mark would be great

Suggest away :)

Canon HV range (20,30,40) are excellent. They use tape - not sure what sort of media you are looking for?

The Panasonics look pretty good. Some of them have a function which records 3 seconds BEFORE you press the record button. So if something happens where you are already pointing the camera, but you're not recording, quickly press record and you'll get it on tape (not real tape though). There are SD and HD options. SD being cheaper.

I think at the higher end of your price band, you can get one with the 3MOS sensors. 3 sensors, one for each colour channel. Much better image.

I've been looking a camcorders a lot recently, and they are the ones that catch my eye the most.

I've got a little Kodak Zi8 pocket cam. Pretty good in the right conditions, but by no means a proper camcorder. Done a few little projects on it though. It's fun. :D

Interested to hear other suggestions. Canon are probably very good though, as mentioned!
