Yes
I've just charged my Canon batteries upto full power to download the firmware updates. Put them in the camera (grip) turned it on, no problem.

I then turned the camera off, removed the CF card, turned the camera back on, realised I needed to format the CF card, camera off again, re insert CF card, turn the camera back on again. Nothing!!
I've removed the CF card, the batteries and put them back in, nothing.
I ended up changing my fully charged Canon batteries with some third party batteries and hey presto all is well.
This is a bit of a concern as I was just about to attempt the firmware upgrade.
Not sure whether to go ahead with the update now.

Has this happened to anyone else??
Ian..

Bad news to hear that...
Not got one, I would double-check that you haven't bent a pin on the CF card socket, and that your CF card door is closed well (microswitch to turn off camera hidden in there if it is like the other models)

Thanks
I'll have to try and have a closer look in the CF compartment.
I'm a bit concerned now

Is the 50d warranty OK? Could you live without it if the camera failed during update?

Could the grip have been loose? On the 400d there is a small microswitch in the battery compartment as well. I am wondering if the grip were loose (you were probably manhandling a bit with the battery change and CF card etc.) then perhaps the microswitch became non-switched?
