Camera Armour

Well basically, being new to photography i'm paranoid about damaging my camera. I've seen this advertised in several places, so...

Camera Armour - Yay or Nay?

The things that make me wonder about it's usefulness are:

1. How much size/weight does it add, and

2. If it was to get wet, would the armour not 'hold' the liquid onto the body?

Thanks in advance.

NAY!
Cameras are tough - and a few scrapes and scratches can look good! Your camera is for using not to put in a showcase!

The armour is a moulded silicone or rubber casing. It adds a few mm in each direction, making it slightly chunkier to hold. Not sure how much weight it adds, but not much.

If water got between the body and armour it would stay put and possibly creep due to capilliary action. If it got wet, it would be sensible to take off the casing and allow both to dry.

This is true, but i've heard that the entry level DSLRs can be delicate.

Also, @andrewc, I'd be more scared of water getting in there without me noticing. That's what scares me about it.

Presumably you know when its raining, and anyone using their camera in the rain should be drying it before putting it away anyway.

Hah, this is true, probably just paranoia on my part.

@David1701 - Yeah i used mine in the snow but if it's fine in the rain, suppose there's nothing to worry about. I'll save myself the extra few quid and the few mm in my camera bag i think.

Personally, I wouldn't bother, unless you are in an environment where it is continually going to be knocked about.

The one thing i would recommend would be a LCD screen protector to help stop the rear screen getting scratched. These can be a simple plastic film to a multi-coated glass protector - GGS or Giotis for example

Back when I had a d40, I used a camera armour cover to increase the physical size of it, and it did protect it I guess, but not as much as they'd probably like to bill. Certainly made the otherwise fairly small camera more easy to hold though imo.

Like everything else in life it has a purpose, I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes to protecting the body from a drop but it will stop it getting battered if you have a tendency of throwing it around.
Its also good for gripping the camera with gloves on in fact its good for gripping the body full stop.
