Camera back orders - how bad?

No
Speaking to my Mrs this morning she says - "Yes, there's a real shortage of high end stuff, L glass, 5Ds, 7Ds, D700s, D3s etc".

I was shocked. Possibly I've had my head in the sand and there is a thread on this already (sorry if there is!)?

So, how bad is it?

If I wanted to get hold of a 5DII (body only) - or last resort a 7D, where am I likely to find one?

I'm at work right now, so I can't really ring round to find out :(

Cheers.

i imagine there has been or still is a backlog as a result of the events in japan, if factories have been damaged and/or logistical routes hampered then it will probably be causing a significant impact in manufacture/shipping times.

Which will hopefully lead to the big names diversifying the locations for their plants to prevent issues in the event of future problems in Japan. Added bonus this could make prices much less dependant on the Yen and could also lead to a drop in prices if manufacturing is shifted to cheaper locations like China.

Thanks guys.

2nd hand from MPB?

Possibly (thanks Neil).

Surely someone out there has bought a 5DII / 7D in the last few weeks? Was it a struggle to find one?

Does anyone know how long back orders are at the moment?

Cheers.

Well, there's a few companies selling via Amazon who claim to have (low) stock, at least. How true that is is another question.

Well, I just telephoned Jessops sales line. They said "We have no 7Ds or 5Diis in stock and we have no information as to when new stock will arrive" :(

I guess the thing is that no one will die if they can't have a camera for a few months whereas Japan has got to recover from a massive natural (and some manmade) disaster. Production has basically stopped in the Japanese factories. If you really, really need the camera you may have to pay a premium to get one or need to think of an alternative/stop gap to tide you over until they are back online and recovering from the torrid time they have had.

Try entering `5d mk2` into Google Shopping? Ebay probably have something as well.

This was in AP recently.

It was a bit if a struggle to find the lens I was after the other week. I guess we may see prices start to rise, particularly on top end used gear.

Shortage is probably due to photographers panic-buying! Sure you'll be able to find one somewhere and when you do get two just in case ;)

I suspect you are right. Calumet had one, but I'm guessing that has gone by now.

Jessops do have 5DIIs with 24-105mm, but I wonder how long that will last? PM me if you want to know where :)

Cheers.

I recently had a lot of trouble trying to find an L lens. I found online would let me order but when I called them direct I was told

"we are waiting for stock and have no eta".

I got lucky and found what I wanted miles away from where I am but close to a good friend who could collect it for me.
This was about a month ago I assume it's harder now.

I was looking for a nikon D700 as a backup to my D3, starting looking 3 weeks ago and everywhere here (Australia) had sold out. Found some online overseas but I actually rang a couple and they were sold out. Finally found one at Digitalrev in Hong Kong, they said last one in stock, I ordered and it arrived 3 days later.

When I asked a couple of places what would happen if I ordered and it went on backorder they couldnt tell me how long, they were evasive. I had heard from my local camera shop guy that it could be next year, so I said could I be waiting until next year for the backorder? I got a sheepish yes.

It is getting near impossible to find this stuff, second hand sellers are going to do well I think.

Wow! I just wonder how much a£1700 dslr will be worth in a month or so?

I've been to three Jessops in the past week. Kings Lymm, had 60D's, 5Dmk2's and 7D's all in stock, and on the display cabinet. Same story in Milton keynes.

Although buying to sell in a few months, if the lack of incoming stock continues, might not be such a bad idea, I cant lie I'm considering a 5Dmk2.

So I guess, I you can get your hands on a high end Nikon / canon, it could prove to be a short term mini investment. I wonder if togs are buying for that purpose?

Don't forget that stocks of D700/D3S/5DII were being run-down to very low levels by retailers before the earthquake, as they were considered highly-likely to be replaced later this year, and they weren't expecting many more new sales before then.

So all you are seeing now is the result of low stocks combined with panic buying - mostly people deciding they can't wait a few more months for the new models. Prices are rising because there's no need to offer heafty discounts to shift remaining inventory... they are still lower than original launch prices!

That is a very good point. BUT, with everything going on in Japan, with the factories running on limited power etc, surely we can't expect new versions of cameras e.g. 5D3 (or whatever). Therefore, the existing models will run longer. If there's no stock - there's no stock.

Thoughts.
