I'm looking for a camera backpack/daypack which is big enough to hold my camera gear but also give me a decent size back pack area for non camera related stuff.

I can't find any that meet those requirements currently but I have only really been looking on ebay :o

Any suggestions would be great.
 
Take a look at Lowepro, Kata and Vanguard website. Most have an equipment selector so you can choose your gear and it will list what bags will fit it all in. Also check them out at a local camera store. Bags are a very personal choice.
 
Cheers Ian. We have a LCE and jessops local so I will venture in to town this week to have a look.

I don't currently have a massive amount of equipment but need something that'll carry my 1100d and 3-4 lenses and have enough space for some waterproofs and a packed lunch for when I visit motor sport events.

I've seen some packs which have a detachable camera section on the bottom leaving a normal sized back pack but can't find any now :(
 
The kind of bag your describing sounds like Kata 465 or maybe a Lowepro Fastpack. Depends what lenses you have too big fast lenses for motorsport probably won't fit into those type of bags.

I have a Kata 3n1-33 in the classifieds that might suit your needs, It has a nice large camera section in the lower half and a bits and bobs section above which could well store a lunchbox and waterproofs.

I have the LowePro Fastpack 350 which can hold quite a bit of camera gear at the bottom with side access for the body with lens attached (makes using the camera much easier). I usually have a 50D with 28-135 attached, a 10-20, flash, filters, batteries, cleaning kit inc. rocket blower in there.

There's a flap that buckles down to cover the camera section that you can strap your waterproofs into and the laptop compartment can take a camelback/platypus type bladder. The top part will hold a fair bit of stuff too. I haven't used it for 'full-blown' hill-walking (I tend to just take a compact and enjoy the walk) but I have used it for day-trips where I want to carry plenty of stuff like waterproofs, jumper/jacket and a bit of food as well as other odds & sods.

With a bit of a re-shuffle, I would be able to get another lens in or maybe forego something and get a slightly bigger lens in. With a very tight squeeze and a change in the way the separators go, I can get my 150-500 in - but it is too much of a squeeze for me to be happy with it. The 150-500 will fit in the top compartment but you need to be careful - as well as not being padded, you could leave the lens prone to falling out when you access the compartment.
 
Give us an idea on the camera gear you want to carry, makes life easier :)

I managed to miss that when I made my earlier post! My previous reply probably fails on the lens requirement.

Not got a huge amount of kit.

Currently all I have is:

1100d Body
Canon 55-250 + hood
Canon 18-55
Canon 50mm f1.8

The biggest problem i'm finding with most of the bags is the Miscellaneous storage compartment being too small.

The Fastpack 350 would easily accomodate that in the camera gear compartment. The waterproofs would fit in the laptop compartment and the top compartment would hold a good-sized packed lunch and more. There's a mesh pocket on the side for a drinks bottle too ;).

EDIT: I just measured the internals of the top compartment - 21cm high, 29cm wide, 16cm deep - compartment 'rounds off' at the top

Cheers for the link. Been looking on that site but it's hard to get a real idea of scale until I see some n the flesh I think.

I've ust been pointed towards f.stop bags and really like the look of the Guru but feel it's a bit pricey at $245 plus post :(
 
The best option I think would be a Lowepro 250 or 350 depending on the size you need. (if you dont need a laptop bag get a 200 or 300).

The reason I didn't buy these for my camera kit, macbook and misc such as headphones and sketchbooks is because they were not totally suitable for A4 books as such. - or the style I wanted.

So I have bought a North Face Base Camp Free Fall backpack.
It is 21L (hot shot is 30L).
Has an incredibly durable and waterproof material (base camp material). although zips are not waterproof.
It looks nice
it is top quality with 2 yr guarantee

I use the large space for misc, laptop and other stuff and the smaller front pocket for dslr and accessories. It works really well am I will try and get a photo for you of how the dslr fits in (in the compartment the north face websites image is showing as a map pocket ;)
I also stuck a little padding in the zip compartment outside the "map pocket".
Ive been looking for ages and really happy with it!.

Spotted some these in Jessops...

Couldn't see them properly as they had them security tagged to the rack. Splitting the space obviously cuts down on what you can carry but look like they could be interesting.
