Camera backpack and tripod - how do you fly?

I have the Lowepro Fastpack 200 which suits my needs but every time I travel abroad I have to leave my tripod behind because of flight luggage restrictions. I have a Gorillapod which I have used before but does not quite cut it when a large tripod viewing angle is desired. I have tried to pack my tripod into a case to go into the hold .... but it creases my wife's dresses! ;) My tripod is a Giottos MTL 9351B which is "sturdy" to say the least. I have considered smaller lighter tripods but always found them too light for a DSLR with zoom attached. How does anyone cope? Do you take your tripod on flights or leave it at home? I understand there are bags available with a strap to carry a tripod but still think it will be outside the hand luggage size limit. Is there a solution to this or do I make do with my Gorillapod?

I always put the tripod in the case if I take it with me. It's just not worth the hassle of arguing it out with first the check-in desk and then security and then again at the gate when flying budget airlines.

I thought about getting a really cheap one - amazon have some for £7 - so if security make a fuss and make you leave it, it's no great loss. I know it will be flimsy and cak but so long as I stay close to the camera I can save it from a fall

just thinking aloud because I'm going to Tallinn next week to see the xmas market, I reckon I will need slow shutter speeds and therefore a tripod.

ryan air ain't worth the bother of taking hold luggage, especially not for 2 nights, so might have to do without

I will let you know

I have a lightweight but sturdy tripod which I take in my checked luggage, I always take it and rarely use it LOL but the day I don't have it I will see something that needs it.

just to update you - my tripod went via the hand luggage route no problem - in its case, strapped to a rucksack, no questions asked. Happy happy :-)

Ryan Air, but it's the security who I was worried about thus Luton and Tallinn airport security don't mind tripods lol

also I booked in online so no-one at Ryan air would even see the luggage till you get to the gate

have to say though Luton is the worst airport I've ever been to and I will avoid it in future.
