Camera Bag Recommendations

Hi everyone.

I am totally new to SLR photography but am keen to get going with it asap. I bought a second hand Nikon D60 at the weekend and am now looking for a good bag to keep it in.

I like the Crumpler ones but cannot figure out what size I need and the range is pretty confusing (to me at least!). I like the look of this one (the Muffin Top 3000) but I'm not sure if it's big enough - it seems to be from the description but it's hard to tell. Likewise, I don't want a huge bag either. Has anyone got one? Is it worth buying?

I also saw the Lowepro AW 160 which seems to be a more sensible bet but looks a bit drab by comparison. Seems to do what it says on the tin though.

I thought the Crumpler would be dearer but it looks decent value if it does the job.

Would really appreciate any input on this.

Hi Andy,

I recently bought a Nikon D80 with a 18-135mm lens kit. I then bought a second had Lowerprow Altus 160 and altough the camera and lens fitted it was a bit small.

The bag works fine with the D80 and 35mm lens, I have since bought a Hama Track Pack II Rucksack as I did not want a bag that looks like a camera bag and I wanted something cheap.

The bag is okay and was under £20, it is also big enought to carry the camera and a number of lens.

Might be worth going to a local shop to see what the sell first.
 
I strongly suggest visiting one or two chain stores and getting your hands on a variety of bags. I was looking at Lowepro bags, but after visiting a store went for a ThinkTank Retrospective. Don't buy just from reading reviews and/or looking at photos on the Internet - make sure you get your hands on the real thing before you buy (if you can).

To give you an idea check out this on the Crumpler Pretty Boy L which is the same size interior as the Muffin Top 3000, give or take a centimeter.
The photos show the Nikon D40 which is the same as the D60 in size. So it`ll give you an idea what will fit. Looks like your good for a couple of small lenses in there.
Probably good to start with a small bag then if and when you decide to buy new lenses you can buy new bags.

Crumpler bags are usually good value so I`d say go for it.

I think I'll try to pop into Jessops at the weekend. I'm getting laser eye so will have a wee while to wander around beforehand I guess!

Do Cambags sell bags? It looks like it's just buying guides etc.?
