Camera Bodies - not really my cup of tea

Might seem a strange statement on a photography forum but over the last few years I've become less and less 'interested' with camera bodies.

I understand the difference between various models and obviously appreciate what each have to offer but other than picking up the one that suits my needs - I'm not exactly gripped (see what I did there) by them.

Perhaps I'm just 'mechanically' minded - I really appreciate the smooth workings of a decent tripod head, the gears or the detail in the machining. Lenses too - the movement of a decent zoom or the quality of the glass. Something tangible that you can feel when using them.

It's hard to explain but it's something that I don't really relate to anymore when it comes to the body itself. Obviously I know there's a world of difference between a D40 and a D3 in terms of build quality but I don't really think of DSLRs anymore as being precision tools with moving parts.

I know what I need if buying and I know which body does what but I find myself mulling over them much in the same way that I might contemplate a TV or a Microwave.

Does anybody else feel this way or am I just having a 'ludite' moment.

funnily enough - talking about that yesterday

just got a D5000 - moving up from D40 - but it will prob be the last body

I view them now a computerized image processing "machine " onto which I attach a lens........took a Nikon F3 out the other evening - felt I was using a camera............

I'll probably go full frame then that would be the final upgrade for the camera body

I think the trouble with modern camera bodies is the rate at which they are replaced, in the old days a decent film body would be in production for 20 years with very little alteration. These days a camera body is replaced almost every year with something only fractionally better which leads to the sort of apathy we are seeing in this thread. The final difference is the standard of build and materials, modern DSLR's have far to much plastic for my liking especially at the bottom end of the market give me a nice metal OM body anu day.

I on the other hand, being in the field of IT, love the electronic components that make modern DSLRs what they are.

Give me information on the latest chips used on the camera bodies, hacked firmwares, extra menu options and other electronic gismos and I am happy :)

They're all really good (and not just Canon/Nikon) so it doesn't really matter what you pick and they'll all be a little bit rubbish in 3 years. Pick a brand, pick the level (amateur/professional), go out and buy it. If you already know the answers to the questions, you can probably pick a camera body in seconds.

So yeah, I can see where you're coming from.
