Thanks For Your Help:)

Just curious on why you haven't thought of any of the Nikons?

What do you hope to photograph now, and say, in 6 months, 1 years time?

Well I am doing an AS in photogarphy towards the end of this year and next year so I will be using it for portraits for that, but out of education I will be using it mostly to take action shots of mountain biking but generally everything really.

From what I've heard which may or may not be true, the EVIL type of camera such as the Panasonic isn't much good at action shots where fast focussing is desired.

Liveview isn't everything and apart from some macro stuff I much prefer an optical viewfinder.

Ahhh gotcha....

Do you know which out of the four would be the best for action shots?

http://www.cameralabs.com/ will probably have video tours of most of those cameras.

Have you gone and tryed them, I spend ages going round and trying different cameras. Seeing what felt right, I ended up with a Nikon (a used D60, pretty similar to the D3000).

I have an a200 from sony... so its the only camera i can comment on.
the cameras are very similar apart from live view.

The camera itself is good, and fast, its the lens that also determines the quality of the shots dont forget, and the speed of focus etc.

The sigma 18-200 i have i would say is a pretty slow lens. Its good in bright light, sunny days but struggles in low light and even on a cloudy day the lens hunts in and out before focusing.

In contrast to that the 50mm 1.8f i have from sony is great even in the dark and focuses lightning fast, takes great sharp pictures with low noise.

Personally i would say the sony is the better camera out the ones you have listed, but it depends on your overal budget, are you just going to use the kit lens? or are you buying seperate lenses as well? Have you considered looking at buying second hand? for the price of a sony a330 and lens you could get a better nikon or cannon, or even sony setup second hand from the classifieds section...

Given the choice, I'd narrow it down to either the Canon or the Olympus... Both are well specified (the Olympus probably more so) and they're both capable of excellent results.

Best thing to do would be to visit a shop that sells both models and try them out first. You'll find that one will feel more comfortable than the other which will make a difference to your shooting... If you're not comfortable, you won't shoot to the best of your abilities.

My daughter did her A/S level last year (in her lunchbreaks in year 11) and used an EOS 400D... She's doing her full A level this year and even though I've told her she can use my 40D, she said that she's comfortable with the performance of the 400D. :)

Whichever you choose, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Best wishes,
Si

Try as many out as you can, get them in your hands and make sure everything fits how you like it. I started with a Sony A200 and think it's a great camera, but when I wanted to upgrade I found the new line of Sonys felt too small (big hands) and I decided to change systems. Tried out all of the alternatives and the Canon 50D fit my hands best.

I couldn't recommend any one of your choices over the others as I haven't tried them, go with what feels right for you, but try to consider the system as a whole and future purchases.

Olympus in body IS and the kit lenses are very good, but I am a Oly man

The G1 won't be as good for fast action stuff - but if you are into biking it is much more convenient to take a smaller camera with you so you are likely to use it more...

Personally I think the Oly is the best out of them all. If you really do prefer live view to using the viewfinder though, the G1 has the best screen which makes a huge difference.

I'm selling a new Oly E-620 (which was the replacement for the E-520) in the for sale section, as mentioned it has built in IS and more suited to sports than the panasonic.

Out if the ones you have mentioned I would def go the E-520 route.

I would go with the Olympus out of all the choices there :)

Sorry, but that is out of my price range.

I will use the viewfinder but I would like to have live view.

I think I will go with the Olympus, many of you think it is a good camera so it must be and with the Canon costing me £340 with an IS lens and the Olympus costing me £349 I might aswell pay the extra ten pounds and get built in image stabilisation and a dust reduction system along with a bigger screen and so on.

Thanks for all your advice

Any feedback on what you got and what you think of it?
