Camera Death... help me pick a replacement please!

So my trusty little Nikon D60 has become untrustworthy and developed a pesky "Error: Press Shutter Release Button Again" message which won't go away. A quick google reveals that if I had a tiny screwdriver I may be able to fix this - but too be honest I've been hankering after a new DSLR body for a while. I will still try to fix it as a back up camera - but it is definately time for an upgrade.

When I got the D60 I really wanted a D90 so I always thought this would be my upgrade. They seem good value second hand and I'm sure it is still a good option - but I have not kept up to date with newer models at all. Can anyone help point me in the right direction please?

I have been looking at second hand sites and I think the following are in the running if I splash a bit more cash:

D5200 (Although not sure this is much of an upgrade?)
D300(s?)
D7000
D7100

Are any of these worth the extra money over a D90? Am I missing an obvious contender?

Any help gratefully received. I've got a few days before I can make the purchase as my bank card has also been cloned and I am waiting for a new one to arrive... I currently have no means of payment!! I feel I should spend this time wisely to pick the best replacement. Budget is £700 including any extras e.g. new spare battery.
 
I should have said from what I have read so far I am leaning towards the D7000.
 
Thanks Steve - looking at the second hand prices the D7000 looks to be the best option. Am just googling D7000 v D7100 to see if the extra money is worth it.
 
Unless you want an excuse to go FF (not suggesting that FF is a necessary move or always an upgrade [although it would certainly be an upgrade from a D60!])...
 
I don't really feel the need to move to FF - not even considered it to be honest!
 
d5200 is not an upgrade the d7000 had some issues so i would go for the d7100 which had these problems sorted hth mike

Thanks Mike - what kind of problems do you mean?
 
The D7000 issues were mainly when it was first introduced over 3 years ago. Not heard of any/many issues with the later stuff.
The D7100 had quite a few issues when it was released too.

You can get a new UK supplied D7000 for less than £580 & imho well worth it!
 
Budget of £700 ..
That will get you a nice D3200 & lens...
If you don't need the lenses, then as said D7000/ 7100.
 
Many D7000 users are extremely happy, I know a professional who uses one still.

Money no object I would move onto 35mm format DSLR if you print big and feel you benefit from the better low light performance these cameras can give over crop.

i have 2 friends who are very happy with their d7000 but wished they could "upgrade" to the 7100 but as they have already shelled out for the d7000 its not an option hth mike

that was my point Steve as they already have a d7000 there is no point.what i meant was they maybe wished they had waited for the 7100

You are right Steve and today I have bitten the bullet and ordered a second hand D7000 from MPB (because I trust them!). Thank you for all the advice everyone - I just couldn't justify the extra cash for the D7100 but the D7000 seemed worth it over the D90.
