This has been asked in a previouse thread but needs it's own thread. I have always used Cokin filters and I had to get ASAP an ND filter for the eclipse. I got this on Amazon which worked K&F CONCEPT 82mm Variable ND Filter ND2-400 1-9 Stops. BUT. it has a diameter of 88mm so why is it 82mm.

If I am to go down this K&F route, I looked at K&F holder
K&F CONCEPT: Metal Square Filter Holder 100mm with Adapters 49mm-82mm. According to Amazon help 100mm is the only size that will fit. My cokin filter folder accepts a round polariser filter as well as slots for the square filters. So what can I get if I am to transition to a K&F which is supposed to be the professionals choice?

So where should I go with all of this? I have already got a large collection of Cokin 'A' including the star range.

This holder only takes one filter and is expensive for what I get. Just one filter

If you used a 9 stop ND for the eclipse I'm surprised you don't need a new sensor

I used other filters as well. Camera is working perfectly still.

I am not sure I have understood your question. Is it - I have a large set of Cokin A filters but needed an emergency extra for the eclipse which is a K&F, should I switch to K&F? If so, I think the answer is no, stick with your Cokin A, sell the K&F one if you don't need it, and get the extra filters you do need in Cokin A size when they become available.

On the 82mm vs 88mm, my guess is the 82mm is the filter size and 88mm is the total physical diameter including the rotating rings.
 
NO. I have an amazing large cockin collection with most of them being type 'A' including Star, Warm, Sepia, Soft, Diffuser, Colour and Transition. I have some type 'P' now. I am looking into getting K&F as these are supposed to be better quality and professional.

I can't find suitable holders and filters, well not on Amazon. The filter I got ASAP

OK, I understand better what you’re asking now.

I think the confusion is that K&F isn’t one interchangeable filter system. The 82mm variable ND you’ve bought is a screw-in filter. 82mm refers to the lens thread, while the rotating part of the filter is physically 88mm across. It isn’t intended to fit into the X-Pro holder.

The X-Pro is a separate 100mm square filter system, more comparable to your Cokin holder and square filters.

So I wouldn’t switch simply because K&F is supposedly more “professional”. I’d first decide whether your current Cokin setup is actually doing something for you, and if not, what it is. Then people can probably recommend the appropriate system.

From what you've shared, I think my recommendation will stay the same. Stick with what you have already. You have a large Cokin collection that apparently does what you need, and I wouldn’t change systems simply because K&F is described as more "professional".
 
I have been lead to beleive on this forum and others that K&F is better as it is glass and has anti-glare etc. Also professionals would go for K&F. If you recomend sticking with Cokin then that is fine by me. Execpt, I do not see the extensive range they used to have. I still have a very old 1995 catalouge with more filters in it than I see now. I needed to by the star filter Cokin P057 on eBay now.

I thought going to the Z range 100mm would work as other manufacturers have adopted 100mm size. Problem now with Cokin is they have now changed the lettering system.
A->S, P->M, Z->L and Z-> XL. I supoose it just means small, medium, large and extra large now.

The reason I was getting back into this was because I wanted to take pictures of the eclipse. I managed it i the end but I was meat with deadly silence about the filters to use only told not to do it it will destroy your camera. Others on this forum took pictures and there cameras were not destroyed. So qwhy did I not get any help?

You asked here and got that response? Or did you misunderstand when you were told not to use a 9 stop VND (which is/was the right answer)?

Does your variable ND have an external thread? If so, and you insist on using these filters together, then I would get a step ring to mount your Cokins to the front of the VND. It's a bit of a cobble, but it would work. But I don't see the point really. Most of these filters are "specialty" use and serve limited purpose; they aren't typically stacked.

In regards to quality, Cokin is rather low end IMO. But that doesn't really matter for "special effects" filters usually; the point is the effect; not technical IQ... back when things like Cokin star filters were popular we also stretched nylon stockings over the lens for a sepia tone soft focus effect.

As already said your 88mm round filter is meant to screw onto a lens with an 88mm filter size. It's not meant to go it a holder ( if I'm understanding you properly) if your lens filter is a different size, say 77mm you can get step down rings to allow the larger filter to fit.
You can get sets of stepping rings quite cheaply, allowing you to use a large filter on several smaller lens.
