Camera for fishing required - Taking pictures of me and the catch

I am doing some research on what camera to buy and would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

It will be used when im fishing, mainly for taking pictures of me and my catches when theres no one else around to take the photo for me.

I dont mind if its a compact, DSLR, or a bridge just as long as its a fairly decent camera and it meets my 'must have' requirements below. The main one im not sure about is the ability to use a remote shutter release, is this available on anything other than a DSLR? I hope so!

Must haves:

- Ability to use a remote (for shutter release)
- Ability to be mounted on a tripod
- Good low light performance
- Decent 'Auto' mode for when i dont have time to tinker
- Below £200

Nice to have but no essential:

- Flip round sceen so I can see the picture / frame
- It would be nice if it was a compact or a bridge, but not entirely against an SLR.

My budget is around £200, but if my requirements can be achieved for less then obviously that would be better.

You are not going to have all that for £200. Bridges have tiny sensors the same you will find in compacts and a not very good in low light. You might be able to get a second hand sony nex 3 or 5 for £250.
 
The Canon G series are renowned as the best cameras in terms of performance, price and ease of use for what you are going to be using it for. The most recent model you can pick up used within your budget would be my recommendation. Low light performance might not be great, but that's what the flash is for.

I used a Canon S3IS for about six years and it worked great in daylight and at night. Personally I prefer using a bulb release on an adaptor to a remote.

I would say they are renowned for being a over priced compact camera!:)
 
OP - all the carp anglers at my place use Canon G series because they're tough, good to use for self takes, have a flip out screen, and above all, they're reliable.

Thank you. Is that the Powershot G series? Any particular models worth looking at?

Thanks to everyone else who has posted too, im upping the budget!!! Going to top it out at £450 max.

Yes, Powershot G series. One of the guys uses a G6 but I'm seeing a lot of G12s becuase of the flip out screen and very high IQ.

I hear alot of the carp anglers put a mirror on the flip round screen so they can look at themselves :lol::lol:

I do agree, the G series is the way ahead, if you go on any of the mudpigging sites, most will recommend them. G6 has been highly recommended, but G12 is more up to date.
 
I'd go with what's said before, the canon G series are first class, I've a G9 which is getting on a bit, the G12 would do the job better. Get a Terry Eustace bank stick adaptor and you'll find self takes much easier without having to take a tripod, a 16" alloy bankstick weighs a lot less.

Gardner do 2 different adaptors, make sure you get one that is like a mini ball head and not the straight one.
