Camera for motorsport 7d? Could you help

Hello people just joined this forum and must say it seems theres alot of good advice and members on here, I really would appreciate it if you could give me your advice because I really don't know much when It comes to photography.

Anyway I'm into my motorsport (rallying) and that is what my camera is mainly used for, I bought a 650d last year it was ok but want something fast enough for very fast moving objects ,which is the reason I'm considering buying the canon 7d I do like canon so not really interested in other brands.
I'm going to France next month to watch the Wrc and really would like some decent pictures would you recommend the 7d or is there another? My budget is around £2000 for the camera.

Also I should say I would like a decent lens with fast, good zoom and the ability to capture fast moving cars.

I'd be very grateful if you could help me because to be honest I don't have a clue about photography but willing to learn, Thanks Mark
 
it'll be more about the lenes tbh, I'd say a 16-50 f2.8 or similer, and a 70-200 f2.8 or f4

optional a fast 1.8 prime, cpl filter, variable nd filter, teleconverter or longer lens
 
What lenses do you have at the moment. I tend to agree with the previous post, the 7D is a very capable sports camera and has a comprehensive (and complex) focussing system which needs to be learned to get the most out of it.
Having said that there is no reason you cannot get consistently good shots from a 650D with fast good glass. In fact I would go as far as to say its possible with most of todays Dslr's. Good technique, good positioning, pre focusing and good timing should yield results. The thing with track/rally cars is that there path is fixed so you know where they are going to be at a given point.
 
I've not used a 7D so can't comment there, but my motorsport kit consists of a 50D plus 70-300L. I find this an excellent combination. Normally I don't take a short zoom when I attend races - just can't be bothered with the lens swapping, so my G12 is on duty for "static" type shots. I appreciate that the only 50Ds you will be able to get hold of will be used - which may or may not be an option for you.
In previous times, I used my 450D ( 3 generations? before your 650D) for motorsport and despite the slower max FPS (around 3.5fps if my memory serves me correctly), I managed to take photos which I was delighted with and that with a 55-250, not my current 70-300L. Obviously, the "keeper rate" was a lot lower then than it is now, albeit that is also partially down to improving panning technique.
 
As above, you don't really need a 8fps camera for motorsport, your technique is far more important than the fps of the camera.

Your current 650 is more than capable of motorsport.
 
I'd be wary about jumping straight to a 7d in your position. You state yourself that you are new to photography, and getting a 7d at this stage will be quite a learning curve. You will not notice an improvement in image quality over your 650d, and the focissing system will take quite a bit of working out, which will detract you from your shooting. Also you don't need to machine gun your shots no matter what anyone states, so don't ned the 8fps, and as already mentioned you know where your subject is likely to be, so advanced focussing is not absolutely critical.

There are a lot of high quality lenses available within your budget, but again, for motorsport, you often won't use the faster apertures as you'll be stopping down to slow the shutter speed for panning purposes.

What lenses do you currently have, and how close are you likely to be to the action?

So if I do decide to buy a 7d or to stick with the 650d I have at the moment what lens would you recommend me buying? All I have now is the standard kit lens and to be honest it's horrendous for capturing the fast close up action I want.
I'm usually within 10 feet of the car if that helps, I don't mind spending around £1500 for something decent if it helps me get good results, any suggestions ?

Yes, put at Least £1000 back in the bank and get a decent used Fast Lens. If you are 10 ft away then the 17-55 f2.8is (£500 used) is Abby Fabby, other options would be a Prime lens, perhaps a 35mm f2/f2.8.
With either of those at 10ft you would be needing a fairly small aperture F8-F16 to get the whole/majority of the car in focus but the fast apertures of these lenses (f2.8 or less) makes the centre cross type focussing point of the 650D very quick and accurate compared to the kit lens.
 
For £1500 I personally would stick with your camera and get a 70-200 f2.8 mk1 is for in the face rally shots and the 17-55 f2.8 for the wider shots.
You will notice a massive difference with those lenses compared to the kit lens.
 
I'll wade in. A 7d will be cracking for what you are trying to do. I've got one. It's solid, weather sealed and with the smaller sensor will get you closer to the action. You can also shoot at a high fps so you will get plenty of decent shots. The autofocus is pretty decent, better than anything else you can get for the money with canon.

As for lens, what about a 100-400L? I've currently got one and it's pretty decent. I'm changing it to a 70-200 2.8 as I want something I can use indoors. But for the money the 100-400 is amazing. With a crop sensor you will get very very close to the action. And the push pull system is very quick and easy once you get used to it.
