Sensor format? Required depth of field? How large is the still life?
I recently did some still life's of sea shell which were about an inch long (or 25mm for our younger readers). I used my 90 mm lens on a APS-C camera. If my subject had been a foot across (300mm), I would have used a shorter focal length lens.
Light is probably the most important thing in still life, lens choice probably depends on how much space you have to shoot in but a "standard" lens (e.g. 50mm on full-frame) is probably a good place to start.
