I've currently been insured with Photoguard for the past 3 years, thankfully never needing to claim so no idea if they are any good or not.
My premium increases year on year and now is at the point that i'm looking elsewhere.
I'm a keen amateur with equipment currently insured for the value of £11,850.
Photoguard is quoting £413.
Does this seem expensive? It doesn't include accidental damage or any PL.

Has anyone claimed from Photoguard? If so how'd it go, as if they're decent when something happen then they might be worth the premium.
Has anyone had a good experience with another insurer and are competitively priced?
Recommendations for insurers that take amateurs most welcome.

We were with photoguard but left after the last yearly increase, same boat as you never had to claim so I can't speak for their claims service. We're now with Glover and Howe after many recommendations from others in the trade, we've only had to declare items above £600 to replace but in total we have around 20k in stuff. 5 million in public liability and 75k in professional indemnity and it covers the both of us, policy is £357 a year off the top of my head and their service so far has been great. Email: luke.fisk@gloverhowe.co.uk if you want a quote from them.

It's been said hundreds of times here, adding camera gear to home insurance is massively cheaper than bespoke insurance. Those companies prey on the 'over cautious', pro insurance including PLI would be less than that.

Another happy Glover and Howe customer. We've had 2 claims with them over the course of 10 years and both were handled very quickly and professionally, with no quibbles.

I know we looked at using our home insurance but it wouldn't have covered us for all the travel I do with my camera gear. YMMV.

Home contents insurance under the 'All Risks' section is the way to go for the non-professional. All you have to do is let them know about individual items over a certain amount (should be somewhere in the policy for details) and pay an admin fee to have those added to the schedule. This should cover your gear for accidental damage and theft outdoors (not sure about from your car or overseas travel). I suggest you try phoning yours as it will only cost you the price of the call and some of your time.

It also depends what you're insuring. I found my Canon 500mm f/4 to be a non-starter when it came to adding it to my contents insurance.

I had £20,000 of camera gear on my home insurance and they happily paid out for a D700 and 400mm f/2.8, im with esure.

I use insure for retirement for my home insurance and the policy (all risks) covers my camera gear, I've only had to claim once when my late dog knocked over a tripod with my old Sigma 400 f5.6 on it, I never expected much but was surprised to find the policy was "new for old" and they replaced the destroyed sigma with a canon 400 f5.6 !!
