Camera Insurance

Just checked on my Home contents insurance and found that my camera equipment is not covered if I leave it in a hotel room or vehicle unattended, even if it is in the boot.

Up until now I was happy with my insurance but as may have to leave my kit in a hotel room I just wondered if anyone had any advice for me.

I have tried to search for "Camera Insurance" but did not come up with anything definitive.

Thanks in advance.

our house insurance covers it, if not the car does if you leave it in the car... I would consider shopping around with your house insurance...

ps - we are with Tesco

I use PhotoGuard and have done for the last 2 years now. Seem good, can't really complain about them and they do different types of cover depending on what you're after.

but have you ever claimed with them?

they dont pay out if you leave your camera unattended in a hotel room. If it goes missing and there is no sign of a break in (i.e. the cleaner nicks it) then photoguard will tell you to shove it.

your best bet by miles is to keep your camera in the safe in your room (most hotel rooms have them - even travelodge).

Otherwise, there are quite a lot of threads on TPF about insurance. Most of them contain a rant from me about photoguard not paying up when £2500 worth of my camera was nicked.

Check out other general insurance companies. One guy on here was with ING and left his camera in a field. When he went back it was gone and they still paid up.

ask you home insurance to increase items away from the home, thats if they are any good.

Abbey Home/Contents insurance will cover items, so long as they are out of site (i.e. covered), even if not in the boot (or at least that is what their phone operator said).
You have to specify any item worth more than £1000.
Might be worthwhile shopping around.
