Camera insurance

I'd be really grateful if I could have some advice on this...

Basically, I own around £2500 worth of gear (7d, 400mm f5.6 + telecoverter, 28mm f1.8) and I'm starting to think it may be worth getting insurance to cover damage/theft/other. I'm just a young student amateur. So which company would you recommend and why?

Also, I'm travelling to Rome this Easter and I've had bad experiences with (less valuable) camera equipment being nicked there. I'm not sure how much my travel insurance covers, but I don't think it's as much as 2.5k.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Do you have house insurance  as that may be worth asking them - I've got mine on our house insurance, althou I may need to contact them to up the price, saying that...

I can't give you any advice on this but I was thinking of posting the same question so I shall be lurking in this thread. :)

house contents insurance - call your insurers and ask them!

i know my camera equipment is insured to up to £2,000 on house insurance including damage when travelling or something like that, its under my parents name so im not fully clued up on it myself.

Thanks for all the comments!

I should have specified that my parents' home insurance is apparently really complicated and my Dad's said that it would be impractical (and costly) to go with that.

Gramps, I've looked at Aaduki although they're not the cheapest there are. Camerainsurance.co.uk charges around £60, but I don't just want to go for the first on a Google search unless I know they're reliable...

I'm in a similar position to you and I went with photoguard in the end, about £4.50 a month it works out at.

I've used both photoguard and aaduki and would recommend both but I insure for business also not had a claim but heard both have settled claims well. Suggestion is good about home insurance, if you have it (student ?), but read very carefully exact what cover is offered, at what value does equipment have to be itemised and with regard to travel where, how long and what cover is offered.

I use Photoguard, and made a claim recently for accidental damage where my camera fell and was quite badly damaged (and so was the Sigma 17-70 attached)... they dealt with the claim pretty well. No hassle... Items collected by couriers... a few weeks for repair, and the items delivered back fully working.

Not a bad price and no quibble claim service. I would check about european or worldwide cover tho just to make sure!!

Home insurance I think is a great recommendation. If your Dad's insurance is that complicated do you not need your own for your other possessions anyway ?. I was amazed when looking at just camera insurance it was compared to home insurance which covers everything in the house

Just thought I would share this information. I have just gone through process of adding away from cover for my camera equipment. Hope my thought process and outcome might be of help to others.

I have had sufficient at home cover but no personnel possession cover away from home. I am in the amateur class of photographer.

I wanted cover to include in transit and accidental damage away from home as well as theft and loss.
I have no accidental damage cover at home cover. I am happy to take risk of not damaging equipment while at home.

I got a quote from my home contents insurance and a couple of others specialist sites.

For me the cheapest option was to add personnel possession to my existing home contents policy I did not need to add accidental damage cover in the home to achieve this. While going through the process I made sure to check the cover met my needs by confirming with them the cover I wanted.
Cover worked out at circa £5 per month for £3.5K cover single item limit of £1.5K
