Camera Insurance

Having read another thread tonight regarding camera insurance I have sat down to calculate my current kit value. It's surprisingly more than I currently have insured with my home insurance (going to give them a call tomorrow). I have been thinking of getting specialist cover, mainly for the in car unattended cover that my home insurance doesn't cover.

I've been thinking of Aaduki as their cover seems to be good and claimants don't seem to have many issues when claiming. I've been reading their T&Cs, their seem to be a couple of strange ones I need to speak them about, mainly:

  • 2nd hand items as most of my kit was bought 2nd on here, ebay or some shops.
  • Car types covered and journeys started before 0600 as many trips start before 0600 for sunrise.
  • Confirming how to provide 2nd hand purchase price when you have no receipt.
  • Theft of car keys from inside house when camera equipment is in the boot during the day.

Is there any questions I should be asking? I'm going to compare home insurance vs specialist. The only benefit of specialist seems to in car coverage.

You don't need to quote second hand prices. I have the amateur policy and it's new for old. Lot's of my kit was brought second hand and it wasn't a problem when I claimed. I proved ownership for a fair amount of it by just sending them a photo with the serial number on, something luckily I could do. However an image with exif data would have been enough. I can't comment on car cover as it wasn't relevant to me. However I do remember you can pay extra to get extra cover for at night.

Honestly - just call them up and ask. You arn't going to get any info on here which you could take to the financial ombudsman if anything does go wrong. They are also very friendly and decent people.

Oh one piece of advice. Value your kit at wex prices! Luckily I actually increased my insurance amount when I took out my insurance when I went though my items over 1k over the phone. It was scary to think how much it was all worth. Adding another 4k cost about £10. So it's better to be over insured than under.

Thanks supersammy it's more questions I should ask rather than actual info. I did speak to them at the nec in March and they did seem to be very nice and helpful. You are right about how scary it is when you add everything up, at WEX prices is going to even more scary! I covered my kit last year on my home insurance after a boat taking us on a photography trip started to take on water, never seen so many worried photographers before! Must been kit worth tens of thousands at that point too.

That's interesting you said old for new cover as their T&Cs don't exactly read like that, I'm going to give them a call and go through my exact kit and list all prices and confirm what is new and what is 2nd hand.

I wasn't aware of the need for WEX prices either so that's something I've learnt from this thread. I like the idea of over insuring rather than under insuring too.
