Yes
I lost my Nikon S9700 yesterday at a flower show, so think it's time the rest of my equipment was insured, any recommendations on companies, just want good value with not too many prohibitions, I do one three week trip in Europe in my caravan a year and the rest is UK cover.

I'm sure there is another thread on here about insurance but the consensus was to use your house insurance. You may need to beef it up a little but the extra cost was significantly more effective than specialised photographic insurance - clearly for a hobbyist rather than a pro.

Yeah, I just use house insurance (John Lewis - service and level of cover is great) - they replaced a D700 when it succumbed to the New Zealand elements.

If you have anything online anywhere which offers images for sale (you don't have to have sold anything, just be trying to), house insurance won't pay out (assuming they find it). The same goes for equipment used to process said photos (monitor, PC etc.).

Glover & Howe have always been good service for me. I've not claimed through them thankfully but a friend has without bother.

Just added my gear up, not including the lost Nikon S9700, the total comes to £2388.98, not including filters and ancillaries like spare batts.

Spare batteries and filters are part of the gear, include them :)

It's not the total amount you need to worry about it is the maximum cost of each item. Just check your household insurance to see what is the limit for a single item. You may need to call out individual expensive items. Total cost is only a consideration when replacing the contents of the whole house, say as a result of a fire.

I need to cover my gear when away in the caravan, my better half will phone house insurance tomorrow and price an add on, it's about £60.00 to cover that value annually with camera insurance, but think house insurance cover will be cheaper as an add on. Will post results for general interest when sorted. Our house insurance is £15000 for any one valuable item.

You will probably find that you want to list some 'named items' with them for more costly stuff etc... I have. My gear is covered by home insurance & it's worth a good chunk.

Photoguard are pretty reasonable and their site is user-friendly to talilor your policies to the cover you want/need.

I use Photoguard and they replaced my D7000 really quickly when some dozy sod dropped it in the sea.

Household insurance works for me.

Individual values are relevant as high value items may need to be specified. Total value is also relevant as the total value of all goods away from home may breach the standard level. Just increase as appropriate.

From this I deduce that they've diligently allowed you to pay them and not given you any hassle during the process!

If you read all of the post, Bob, you will see I mentioned that a friend has claimed through them with no bother... I haven't myself though.

Contacted AXA today who kindly added £2400 of camera equipment to our house insurance and charged us £2.00 a year less for the policy than without camera gear, well pleased, they must think photographers are less risk!!!!!!

Maybe they thought you'd beefed up your security when you told them you'd bought a nice big Canon...

I am with Towergate for equipment and liability etc. expensive but very high level of service.

And also now a very large amount in debt so don't expect your renewal premium to be cheap!
