Folks, my camera equipment insurance is due for renewal at the end of this week. I have been with Photoguard for a few years now and have never bothered looking into changing it however im now looking at getting a better deal if possible. So what other companies are there that offers camera insurance? Also have you had any experiences of good or bad camera equipment claims? Let me know as at times its not all about the cost and customer service counts. I am not fully pro( i make money from it but i have a main job) so i know some only insure pros. Thanks.

Household contents insurance, though the semi-pro status may be an issue. You could ask.

My home insurance includes £7500 of photographic cover including travel overseas. I suspect I could increase this sum for an additional premium if I needed to. Once again though the semi pro status may be a problem. Worth shopping around.

My home insurance wont fully cover my equipment hence i went to Photoguard a few years ago.

'Won't fully cover' as in total value, which you can ask/pay to be increased, or as in the type of risk you are asking them to take on?

Is that feature a standard part of your policy or a specific add-on, as opposed to itemised list ?
Also, which insurance company are you with as I may look into that.

Thanks

Will talk to the wife tonight as I believe it's through whoever we have our mortgage through- it was about 4-5 years ago though. If I remember correctly they wouldn't insure items stored in the car and I believe they would only insure upto £5000 for camera equipment. They may have at the time insured for more but the cost would have been more than I was with photo guard at the time or I don't think I would have done it.

It is a standard part of my policy. Insurance company is More Than. The heading is all risks cover and it covers items up to £1500 each in value. All risks covers, as the name suggests, everything including theft, loss and accidental damage. Items stored in a car must be out of sight in the boot or the rear of an estate or hatchback. If I wanted to cover anything above £1500 in value I need to tell them exactly what I want covered. Cover is new for old.

I hope this helps.

Esure home insurance with £20,000 of equipment cover, already made a succesful claim a couple of years back for a D3S and 400mm with no issues and my home and contents is under £250 incl legal and home emergency coer for a 3 bed semi

Just for clarity and not trying to get into a p------g war here but More Than cover me for £75000 contents in the home with no limit on any type of equipment. The £7500 is all risk cover including out of the house and overseas. For a four bed detached my annual premium for contents, building and legal cover is £220 per annum.

I am not saying More Than are the best the point is it is well worth shopping around for the best deal.

Thanks Martin, that's great

My house insurance is up for renewal, 4 bed detached and I am getting similar quotes as Martin & Gary above are paying. Suprised really, as never bothered adding the camera kit before to the house insurance, this also includes outside cover for the gear.

depending on what sort of earnings you make through photography, the specialist cover also includes things like public liability, professional indemnity... it's not just all about the value of your kit if it gets nicked or damaged.

doing the odd wedding and public events, PL is a must for me... PI I haven't yet taken, but might be worthwhile for you.
